Quoting a reliable source in Libya, the BBC is reporting that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has left
Source: Radio New Zealand

Quoting a reliable source in Libya, the BBC is reporting that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has left the capital, Tripoli, amid unprecedented protests against his regime.

Dozens of protesters were reported killed in Tripoli, as they were met by security forces using live ammunition and tear gas.

There are reports of government buildings being set on fire.

Colonel Gaddafi's son went on state television on Monday to warn that civil war could ignite and said the regime would "fight to the last bullet".

The cities of Benghazi and al-Bayda now appear to be largely under the control of protesters, and two tribes, including the country's largest, have backed them.

Hague: some information Gaddafi on way to Venezuela

(Reuters) - Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Monday he had seen some information to suggest Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi had fled the country and was on his way to Venezuela.

"You asked me earlier about whether Colonel Gaddafi is in Venezuela," he told reporters on the sidelines of a European Union foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.

"I have no information that says he is, but I have seen some information that suggests he is on his way there at the moment."

If this turns out to be true, I wonder what the Chavez lovers at DU will say about it. To me, Gaddafi and Chavez are like two peas in a pod and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Gaddafi ends up in Venezuela.

Yep, you're right. Except Chavez has been democratically elected 3 times - each time with a larger majority than the time before. Quite the analytic mind you have there, totodeinhere.

15. It's not always how they got into power in the first place that matters.
It's how they act once in power that matters. And once Chavez got elected the first time, he was able to get control of all media in the country and make it difficult for his opposition to have a fair shot in any future elections. When the people elected him the first time, they didn't know what they were getting. And now Chavez is so entrenched that it will probably take a Middle Eastern type uprising to get rid of him.

And why do you think that Chavez is an ally of a brutal dictator like Gaddafi? If Chavez really were a democrat, why would he support the likes of Gaddafi?

And you did not address my question. If Chavez is such a democrat, why does he support a brutal dictator like Gadhafi? And the "enemy of my enemy" line just doesn't cut it. Just because Gadhafi doesn't have the best relations with the USA, that is justification for supporting a dictator? I don't think so. I have always opposed support of dictators in US foreign policy, and I also oppose the support that Chavez has for someone like Gadhafi.

32. And who gets to decide what is misinformation and what it not?
Is that your role or mine? Regardless of who is peddling "misinformation," there is no excuse for Chavez supporting the likes of Gadhafi. And the OP in this thread was about Gadhafi going to Venezuela and that is what I was responding to.

Venezuela’s self-styled socialist leader expressed “delight” at Mr Gaddafi’s first ever visit to South America, referring to him as “one of the great leaders of this century”, and presenting him with a replica of a sword of South American independence hero Simon Bolivar.

totodeinhere posts:
And once Chavez got elected the first time, he was able to get control of all media in the country and make it difficult for his opposition to have a fair shot in any future elections.

Chavez' elections have been certified by the Organization of American States and the Carter Center.

Further, Chavez did not "get control of all media" after his first election. And he does not have control of it now.

Wikipedia - Media representation of Hugo Chávez

Even before the April 2002 coup, many owners, managers, and commentators working for the five major private mainstream television networks and largest mainstream newspapers had stated their opposition to Chávez's policies. These media outlets have accused the Chávez administration of intimidating their journalists using specially dispatched gangs. Chávez in turn alleges that the owners of these networks have primary allegiance not to Venezuela but to the United States, and that they seek the advancement of neoliberalism via corporate propaganda. Private media's most prominent political commentators have reported that, among other things, Chávez is mentally ill and that he harbors a "sexual obsession with Castro".

...<snip>...

Private media coverage of the 11–14 April coup only exacerbated these tensions. On 11 April, the anti-government march, the message "remove Chávez", and the call to redirect the march to the presidential palace in Milaflores, were "widely announced, promoted, and covered by private television channels, whose explicit support for the opposition became evident." A steady stream of unpaid ads asked Venezuelans to participate in the insurrection.

...<snip>...

On the first morning after the 2002 coup, many of the new Carmona government's highest-ranking members appeared on-air to offer their appreciation to the private media for their support. Once the counter-coup was launched by Chavistas and loyalist elements of the Palace Guard, these five stations censored any reporting on the events. Private media owners and managers instead chose to broadcast classic films and sitcom reruns.

...<snip>...

Venezuela still has a wide variety of newspapers and radio stations that are critical of Chavez.

I suggest that you might profitably invest some effort in becoming better informed on this issue.

5. Venezuela denies Libya's Gaddafi en route
(Reuters) - A senior source in the Venezuelan government denied on Monday reports that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was traveling to the South American oil-producing nation led by his ally President Hugo Chavez.

The Caracas government "denies such information," the source told Reuters.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said earlier he had seen information to suggest Gaddafi had fled Libya amid violent protests in several cities that have unsettled the government, and that he was on his way to the South American oil-exporting nation.

CARACAS, Feb 21 (Reuters) - .... The Venezuelan government "denies such information", a senior government source told Reuters.

39. Dictator on the run: Gaddafi may have fled Libya already and be on his way to Venezuela, says Foreig
Source: Daily Mail

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has fled Libya and may be heading for Venezuela, William Hague said today.

The Foreign Secretary said he had seen 'information that suggests he is on the way there at the moment' - as the North African country was up in flames with reports of around 400 dead.

Gaddafi was said to have fled as the country he has ruled for more than 40 years after anti-government demonstrators breached the state television building and set government property alight.

If it is true that he has run away, it would be great news for the Libyan people. No more Jamahiriya crap and one less self-proclaimed socialist state to inflict misery on its people. And if he has run off to Venezuela, I wonder what the Hugo cheerleading squad will have to say about that.

Mutassim Qaddafi with Hillary Clinton

What has that got to do with anything? The U.S. has huge business interests in Libya since we decided to 'forgive and forget' all his past 'crimes' against the U.S.

Many U.S. businesses currently stand to lose billions of dollars in revenue from projects started there in recent years and there is a huge U.S. expat contingency there as a result of those businesses.

So, could he be here in the U.S.? Based on the reasons for the assumptions, it is far more likely since we have more to lose from his fall.

51. There is no proof at all, just rumor which has had an official
denial from the Ven. Govt. That should have ended it.

See my post below as far as the reasoning used to spread this rumor. What a ridiculous assumption. As you'll see, by that reasoning, he and his family are far more likely to be in the U.S. than in Ven.

In fact, it's far more likely that they might be in Britain. His son and heir to his regime, eg, was good friends with Prince Andrew. Shouldn't we include ALL possibilities of where he might be at this point?

This is bad reporting at its very worst, the total lack of facts, the leaving out of a sovereign coutnry's denial, and the basis for the rumor being applicable to so many other places, completely ignored.

No wonder Americans are so ignorant of what is going on in this world.

55. Not "some reason", Chavez and Kaddafi are known to be friends
Think about it, the Sunni Ulemas have issued a fatwah calling for jihad against Kaddafi and his tribe. This means Kaddafi is toast in the Muslim world (he's not about to get help from shiites either). So if there's jihad against the Kaddafi clan, where is he going to hide? Venezuela sounds like a viable option, given their friendship. The question is whether Chavez will stick up for his buddy. I think he won't. Chavez is known to be a bully and has a huge yellow streak down his back - he won't be willing to face jihad just to help his fellow tyrant.

71. Prince Andrew and Said Qaddafi are friends.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QKwwR3v3bcA/SjjzsYDoB_I/AAAAAAAAEEQ/Dr9llQlgVTg/s400/qaddafi+son+clinton6-17-2009+6-40-55+AM.png

Hillary Clinton and Mutassim Qaddafi

President Obama and Qaddafi

Said Qaddafi just bought a ten million dollor home in London.

Nice place for the son of a dictator in a country where he might decide to live as he has many influential friends there.

The Italians love him also. Another possible place for him to go.

Sadly, he cannot go to Venezuela though, as the Ven. Govt. has issued a statement saying so. And has called the rumors, correctly, 'irresponsibl'!

Oops, Qaddafi is likely to be angry about that. He considers such statements to be personal insults and has been known to take action against those who 'insult' him or his family that way.

So, what was your point again?

I could go on posting photos of the many influential friends the Qaddafi family have around the globe, here in the U.S. and in Europe especially and will if you are interested. But for now, this should suffice to dispel any notion that poor Chavez was one of his friends. He appears to have preferred royalty and U.S. politicians as close personal friends for his family.

72. You are misusing the word "friend" here.
Friends have extended stays in ones compounds, give one another awards, and call themselves friends.

Friends don't meet once at a G8 meeting and shake hands (Obama / Gaddafi). Friends don't meet for a brief period to "deepen and broaden our cooperation" (Hilary met Mutassim Gaddafi).

Both Hillary and Obama met their respective "Gaddafi's" once.

You will of course ignore any response about how Chavez cited Gaddafi on the Egyptian crisis and completely deny that their relationship is closer than these other examples.

56. What goes around, comes around
Chavez has spent 10 years abusing human rights, stealing, enriching his family, insulting people, and palling around with dictators and psychopaths. So now this rumour comes out - and you are surprised? Get used to it, your hero pals around with murderous scum, and it's catching up.

Al Jazeera already had a short report discussing Venezuela, and it surmised the Arab rebellion may spread to Latin America - and they think Venezuela is the country ripest for massive demonstrations and revolt against a repressive regime.

53. To The Rescue!
What I find most interesting isn't the article, but the responses to the article.

There really isn't useful information in the article, since it's just about a rumor. It's probably someones well placed speculation more than anything, based on established relationships between OPEC dictators. But it is amusing to see folks rush to the defense of Chavez, before there is any need for such action.

Cult of personality, much?

59. I noticed that as well.
There's a similar pattern in this thread.

I don't understand the vehement rejection of these news stories, out of hand, as myths.

There was a named source in the OP-- the British Foreign Secretary William Hague. He also stated that his source was different from the rumors that had popped up earlier in the media. The 'senior source in the Venezuelan government' denying this development was nameless, as stated in Post #2.

Time will tell where Gaddafi turns up.

69. No, that's nonsense, Chavez would not consider his alliance with Gaddafi a "smear."
His ties with Gaddafi are only now in question because of the Libyan uprising. That's the only reason. If they were not uprising in Libya no one would care or say shit about it.

76. His ties are not in question at all except in the minds of those
who dislike him.

But the ties of the major Western powers, their sales of arms, their discussions of helping him acquire nuclear power, his sons gallivanting around Europe and purchase of property in countries there, THOSE are the ties that are now receiving huge world attention and raising many questions about why these world leaders were so conciliatory towards Qaddafi.

Also receiving attention are the U.S. stars who performed at private parties for his wealthy sons, stars like Beyonce eg. And the warm greeting his son got from U.S. SOS Hillary Clinton not so long ago is also now under scrutiny.

But anyone who wants to know who was 'tied' to Qaddafi can get their answers in detail in the Wikileaks cables.

One notable absence regarding such ties, is, sadly I imagine for you, Venezuela. That country and its leader were apparently way, way, way down on the list of 'ties' with the Libyan leader and his family.

Yes, reading those Cables dispel all the propaganda, (Chavez/Qaddafi eg) and the myths. Cold hard and indisputable evidence of just who was facilitating the brutal dictators lately in the news. So far I have not found a single mention of Chavez. I guess he's not as good at the U.S. or the UK or Italy, or France or Canada at getting close to people like Qaddafi.

Btw, where do you get your information from? When I try to verify the claims you make re Venezuela, I cannot, so if you have something I missed, I would appreciate it. Eg, Chavez selling weapons to Qaddafi, signing huge business contracts in Libya. Stuff like that which is what 'ties' means I assume.

70. I highly doubt that Venezuela would take in Gaddafi openly, publicly.
If Gaddafi gets out of Liyba alive there will be merely rumors, but it won't be known for years.

Seriously, though, I hope he doesn't escape. I would rather see those he murdered get some rough justice.

Anyone else remember what became of the Ceausescus?
