Harvard to Let ROTC Back on Campus
Source: abc

Harvard University is welcoming the Reserve Officer Training Corps program back to campus this week, 41 years after banishing it amid dissent over the Vietnam War.

The Cambridge, Mass., school's change in policy follows the decision by Congress in December to repeal the military ban on gays serving openly, an official familiar with the arrangement said Thursday.

Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus on Friday are scheduled to sign an agreement that will recognize the Naval ROTC's formal presence on campus, according to the official, who wasn't allowed to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

3. I agree with this decision
DADT is being repealed, and it is now time to allow the military back on our college campuses once again.

Those who complain about class inequality within the enlisted ranks should support allowing military recruiters back to our most elite universities.

6. Good call.
But this comes as no surprise. It was clear that when DADT was repealed that the ROTC would be welcomed back.

9. Harvard to Officially Recognize Naval ROTC
Source: The Harvard Crimson

The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will be formally recognized by Harvard Friday after an almost 40-year hiatus, the University announced Thursday. University President Drew G. Faust and Navy Secretary Ray E. Mabus are set to sign an agreement Friday that will recognize Naval ROTC on campus.

“Our renewed relationship affirms the vital role that the members of our Armed Forces play in serving the nation and securing our freedoms, while also affirming inclusion and opportunity as powerful American ideals,” Faust said in a statement. “It broadens the pathways for students to participate in an honorable and admirable calling and in so doing advances our commitment to both learning and service.”

Although ROTC will be officially recognized, a unit will not necessarily be established on campus, and Harvard cadets will continue to train at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Previously, University officials said that they would not recognize the program until “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”—the military policy which banned gays and lesbians from openly serving the military—was lifted. Since Congress repealed the ban in December, Faust and other officials have been in discussions with the Pentagon about bringing the program back to campus.

Good for Harvard. They said their ban was due to DADT, DADT was repealed, so their ban was repealed.

10. I remember some bangled upperclassmen crowing that my nametag was supposed to be 1/4 inch, not 1/8
inch from my pocket.

I went on to become a civilian earning 30,000/year with my own apartment instead of having to live in a berth that smelled like diesel and body odor.

16. Harvard's ban began 41 years ago because of Vietnam.
It continued in recent years because of DADT.
