Houses Passes Bill Stripping Federal Funding for NPR
Source: ABC News

In a largely symbolic move, the House today voted to block all federal funding for NPR, a week after the embattled public radio station found itself the subject of a conservative sting that led to the ouster of its chief executive.

The bill would permanently block all federal funding to NPR and its affiliates and prohibits stations from using federal funds to pay NPR dues and to purchase programming. It would basically bar NPR from applying for grants provided by federal agencies such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Department of Education, Department of Commerce and the National Endowment for the Arts.

They really want the corporatist pigs to run the information. Keeps us stupid. They think.

3. Depends on how far they're willing to take it.
The House has a hold on the purse-strings. The money won't be there unless the House votes on a bill that adds it back in.

10. Oh... I doubt they achieve it either.
Maybe a symbolic funding drop equal to the amount that the national organization uses (rather than daughter stations). It just isn't a big enough dollar amount to fight over.

But if they decided to die on that hill... there's no way to fund NPR. This isn't like a bill that the president can veto or the Senate can let die in committee. In order to fund NPR, both the House and Senate need to pass something with those dollars in it every year.

I'd almost like to see them try.

7. why do they bother. yeah we know you don't like the public. sheesh
Course there is one small problem if PBS went under. Alot of people will be bitching about their automatically set clocks on vcrs (if you still have them) dvd recerders tv sets... since the signal usually comes from PBS.

Other than that. PBS/NPR is the publics stations and I can't see how Congress has any right to strip it. Over here it's PBS over there it's BBC. not the same thing but close

9. The only channel that has mentioned
anything about the altering for the video was MSNBC. Why is that? Do these other outlets not know the video was altered? Just this morning CNN played the altered video and said it was an embarrassment to NPR. It's really getting very frustrating.

15. What percentage of NPR's funding comes from the government?
If I have to donate to keep them going I want anyone appointed by the booosh administration to resign immediately. When does this cut become effective?

16. This is so sad. If I'm not mistaken, smaller markets rely on federal funding
to keep NPR and programming supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting available in their communities.

20. I wonder just how much of this is because NPR is in competation
for viewers with the Corporate owned and operated media giants and that is money that those corporate media giants can not get their hands on. It is a corner of the market that they can not control and there fore they can not make money off of. I do not know that this is true I am asking the question, is this why the GOP hate PBS and NPR? Is it because it is a public set up and not one of their for profit ones. I do not understand why the hate?

Of course the GOP and its little offshoot the Tea Party does not have to have a reason to hate, it is just what they do. Hate and Fear....Hate and Fear....everything to them is HATE AND FEAR.

It is Public owned the it must be socialistic or communistic or some other evil plot to corrupt the minds of children and women and others who are not full adult members of the human race.

Can anyone help me out? Why does the Party of NO hate PBS and NPR?

21. What has the House done since January that hasn't been purely "symbolic"?
I expect that next month, Congressional approval rating will continue its downward slide and move even closer to its historic lows.

25. Glenn Beck proves that O'Keefe's NPR video is basically a fraud
from AMERICAblog

We should have all seen this one coming. Another conservative "gotcha!" video, and another case of a conservative editing the video to make it look like the "liberal" was saying things he shouldn't. Except that, as usual, the video was edited to make it look like the "liberal" was saying things he actually didn't say. I don't k now what to make of it being Glenn Beck's Web site that exposes this, other than to say perhaps this is O'Keefe's "Nixon goes to China" moment. If a raving conservative finds that raving conservative basically lied, then it's hard to refute the source.

26. If NPR loses this part of their funding...
that spells the end of classical music broadcasting throughout southern Oregon and northern CA(repeaters). All the other stations are Rush & company.

Home for our NPR here is the campus of Southern Oregon University, Ashland, Oregon.
