British Muslim who entered Miss Universe contest receives death threat
Source: Guardian

When Shanna Bukhari decided she wanted to be the first Muslim to represent Britain in a global beauty pageant, she suspected the road ahead might not be smooth, but nothing could have prepared her for the abuse she received.

"I have felt in fear for my life," said the 24-year-old Miss Universe contestant. The attacks escalated last week when Bukhari received her first death threat.

The censure has come from various quarters, ranging from Muslims who claim that she is denigrating the name of Islam, to white supremacists who say that an Asian cannot represent the UK, and to women who condemn beauty pageants as an affront to feminism.

Bukhari, born in Blackburn, grew up in Lancashire and is no stranger to intolerance. When she was nine, she ended up in hospital after a man screaming racist abuse had thrown a brick at her, causing so much damage to her stomach that she suffered a blood clot and had to undergo surgery.

8. why does she have to stand for something other than herself
can't we all just be these, like, decontextualized individuals that are sort of blindly doing our own thing

13. what is it you think she has to stand for.. other than herself.? to answer the other question..No.!
a woman performer in Egypt was singing a traditional song in a jazz version in a Café, a guy walked in and stabbed her 35 times, killing her, no one said a thing as he walked out.

i really don't think anyone here understands the status assigned women in Mohammad's Islam. this is really important, we need to educate ourselves, no one else is going to. books are really cheap used at Amazon.com

when our government requests or demands civil rights for women, better treatment for women, it is obvious they don't understand what they are doing either. Islam is what Muhammad said.. telling them not to obey the Prophets teachings is like telling the Jews not to pay any attention to what Abraham or Moses said.

15. it isn't only muslim fundamentalists that are opposed to beauty pageants
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 08:56 PM by BOG PERSON
the article says feminists are also against it. in fact, i bet if real feminists had their way they would abolish beauty pageants.

11. I'd really like to discuss what is behind such assaults, i have lived in an Islamic republic, i have
read 22 books on Islam, read the 4 different versions of the Koran. i am familiar with the Hiddah, Sunnah, Siddah, but i don't want to be Tomb stoned here..

it is best not to discuss religion.. but then they do tear up Christianity here a lot dont they.?? hmmm...

19. I think this is more a cultural and social problem than being an issue of religion...
For example, Alcohol consumption is banned in my Christian family. When I bring up the point that according to the bible, even Jesus drank wine, they just keep silent and try to deflect the topic.

Religion is only an excuse to keep propagating any irrational social norms that can't carry themselves forward in time. The core issue is the social norm. As an example, honor killing is found not only in Islamic nations, its present among Hindus and Christians in India. Even if the religious text doesn't permit such acts, people will always find an explanation or an interpretation that will. This has to be tackled at the level of social behavior rather than targeting religion. If it is not religion, something else will come up and provide reason for propagating such behavior.

political system that micro manages all Muslims lives, with religious aspects.

23. How uncommon are death threats?
I know, for example, that one prominent person here on DU did so (and later apologized). On another board I know about, same thing.

Further, a show that regards the human body as little more than a sex object - I'm supposed to feel ... what? It just seems like prostitution to me.

Obviously, all death threats and violence are to be condemned, but why is this being posted on a liberal, progressive American political discussion board? That's a serious question. What is the relevance here?

28. Seriously?
Do do you think we need a list of groups where it's okay to discuss death threats that may be have been issued, with a separate list of those grops who can't be talked about in connection with any death threats?

30. It's not a matter of can or can't; we are, so obviously, we can.
It's about why are liberals (apparently, since someone raised the topic here) supposed to have policies supporting the right of people to prostitute their bodies in opposition to their associates?

I already stated death threats are unacceptable. If you are civilized, that's a given. By definition, liberals ARE civilized.
