Former Gov. Lucey Leaves Prosser's Campaign, Endorses Kloppenburg
Source: channel 3000

Former Democratic Gov. Patrick Lucey is withdrawing his support for incumbent Justice David Prosser for Wisconsin Supreme Court and is throwing it to Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg.

Lucey appointed Abrahamson to the court. He has nothing but respect for her. It could not have helped that Prosser called her a total bitch.

Less than a week before Tuesday's election for state Supreme Court justice, former Gov. Patrick Lucey on Thursday resigned as an honorary co-chair of Justice David Prosser's campaign and endorsed his opponent, Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg.

Lucey said in a statement that he has followed Prosser's campaign "with increasing dismay and now alarm," adding that "Prosser has lost that most crucial of characteristics for a Supreme Court Justice — as for any judge — even-handed impartiality."

Lucey also cited Prosser's "disturbing distemper and lack of civility that does not bode well for the High Court in the face of demands that are sure to be placed on it in these times of great political and legal volatility."

5. Former Governor Patrick Lucey
Patrick Lucey is a very well-respected conservative Democrat who ran for Vice President of the United States in 1980 with John B Anderson, a Republican, as Independent candidates. He was governor in the early to mid-70s and left when Jimmy Carter appointed him Ambassador to Mexico.

I think he turned 93 last month. He was honorary co-chair of the Prosser campaign with former governor Tommy Thompson (R).

The meat of his statement is here:

"I have followed with increasing dismay and now alarm the campaign of Justice David Prosser, whom I endorsed at the outset of his campaign and in whose campaign I serve as the honorary co-chairman," Lucey said in the statement. "I can no longer in good conscience lend my name and support to Justice Prosser's candidacy. Too much has come to light that Justice Prosser has lost that most crucial of characteristics for a Supreme Court Justice -- as for any judge -- even-handed impartiality. Along with that failing has come a disturbing distemper and lack of civility that does not bode well for the High Court in the face of demands that are sure to be placed on it in these times of great political and legal volatility."

6. What an elegant and eloquent smackdown!
It's nice to see what I consider old time values in this fetid pool of politics we now have. To step down as honorary co-chair and endorse his opponent is huge. You don't see that happen very often. Kudos to The Honorable Patrick Lucey. (It's not often these days that I can use "Honorable" and actually mean it.)

4. Woman hater Prosser is going down and I'm sure Wisconsin will appreciate Justice Kloppenburg and her
judicial temperment when she takes her seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and rules according to the law and not according to the wishes of the Koch Klan.
