Exclusive: WANTED: U.S. workers for crippled Japan nuke plant
Source: Yahoo

NEW YORK (Reuters) - As foreign assignments go this must be just about the most dangerous going.

A U.S. recruiter is hiring nuclear power workers in the United States to help Japan gain control of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant, which has been spewing radiation.

The qualifications: Skills gained in the nuclear industry, a passport, a family willing to let you go, willingness to work in a radioactive zone.

The rewards: Higher than normal pay and the challenge of solving a major crisis.

"About two weeks ago we told our managers to put together a wish list of anyone interested in going to Japan," said Joe Melanson, a recruiter at specialist nuclear industry staffing firm Bartlett Nuclear in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

31. OP article says otherwise.
"So far, the firm has already signed up some workers who will be flying to Japan on Sunday.

Melanson said there will be less than 10 workers in the initial group. Others are expected to follow later, he added."

12. Never have I seen a request
for terminally ill people who will die anyway to do some of these jobs.

Short time to live? Here's how to drive a water truck right to where its needed. Same with anything else where a person can be trained.

Why sacrifice the healthy? Granted specialists are needed for many functions, but.......

A healthy survivors benefit should find many volunteers.

32. Maybe GE pays no taxes on billions of annual income, but it did create these several jobs.
Edited on Fri Apr-01-11 07:10 AM by No Elephants
Shame on us for thinking "trickle down" was purely fictional.

Sure, the jobs are overseas, but at least Americans are getting them. Boo-ya!

"About two weeks ago we told our managers to put together a wish list of anyone interested in going to Japan," said Joe Melanson, a recruiter at specialist nuclear industry staffing firm Bartlett Nuclear in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Thursday."

Living in Massachusetts, I hope someone is still around when Pilgrim blows. It's probably in worse shape than Fukushima was.

P.S. Subject line says "GE pays no taxes on billions of annual income..." Silly me. I meant, "Not only does GE pay no taxes on billions of annual PROFIT, but it also got a tax benefit worth billions."

And put radiation in our atmosphere, too! (Got milk?)

33. Okay
I've seen many entries on the intelligence or lack thereof of those willing to work to stop this disaster but face the issue. Some one has to. Something has to be done. If everyone walks away and washes their hands then the Genie gets further out of the bottle and more will suffer. Who is willing and for whatever their reasons, we should be thankful.

34. Except that the people who caused the problem should be first in line.
But no, they want someone else to fix their problems for them. The people who made profit off this should be willing to go fix the disaster.

Instead we gather up the option-less poor and send them off to fix the uber rich's disasters.

This is a very sick society.

37. They'll get them. Probably as many as they want.
That's pretty much the end goal of the constant hammering on the poor and middle class. When you offer them a job, no matter how likely it is to kill them, plenty will be willing to take it for their family's sake.

Just look how easy it was for BP to hire people for the oil spill.
