Louis Farrakhan defends Gadhafi as a ‘brother’
Source: Chicago Sun Times

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan defended Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi as a “brother” during a two-hour news conference on Thursday, while refraining from condemning President Obama personally for America’s support of the rebels.

“It is a terrible thing for me to hear my brother called all these ugly and filthy names when I can’t recognize him as that,” Farrakhan told his followers who packed Mosque Maryam, the group’s international headquarters on Stony Island.

“What kind of brother would I be if a man has been that way to me and us, and when he is in trouble I refuse to raise my voice in his defense?” he asked.

I understand that he was given money years ago by Libya to help establish a base of operations, but...

Is this guy for real?

1. Back in high school I some friends who were in NOI.
One of them gave me the Green Book. I thought it was tripe, and male chauvinist tripe, at that - a real eclectic mess overall.

That answer is "yes," he is for real. NOI supports Gaddafi very strongly. They're not alone in the Black community in that regard. There are Pan-Africanists like APSP/Uhuru House and AAPRP who also do. There are also a number of other Black nationalist types who are supportive. If you look at some Black community web discussion sites, you will a very different mix of opinions than you find on DU.

2. Ghaddafi gave the NOI money, so he gets their support
At least that seems to be what Farrakhan is saying here. I know there's more to it than that, but it's refreshing to hear a public figure openly admitting that they can be bought.

7. Here in Oakland, we have an on going murder trial thats going to lead
to more trials of members of the Nation of Islam for the murder of a local journalist that was critical of their activities within "Your Black Muslim Bakery" which they ran as a front for some shady criminal dealings.

18. So they were in positions of authority and power and used them to commit crimes??
And their religion, both in practice and dogma, aided and abetted said crimes?

Because that's where you analogy leads me to.

14. I think the Sun is lying. Farrakan comes close to defending, but does not say it.
What Sun says F defends G. If so, it's not in the article.

The closest quote to being damning of F:
“What kind of brother would I be if a man has been that way to me and us, and when he is in trouble I refuse to raise my voice in his defense?”
So, F doesn't refuse to raise his voice in defense, but, does he defend? I'm not seeing a defense. Is F saying he'd offer a defense if he had one?

Personally, I don't care about F or G. I do, however, get bothered by the pot shots most often taken by the RW whenever they have an opportunity to do so.

16. It grieves me that we give the death penalty.
That does not mean that I defend the actions of the convicted.

Does it?
