10 killed in bar shooting in Mexico
Source: cnn

(CNN) -- Ten people were killed and another person was injured after a shooting at a bar late Thursday in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, state prosecutors announced Friday.

The victims ranged in age from 18 to 55 years old, according to a press release sent out by state prosecutors' spokesman Arturo Sandoval.

Seven of the victims died at the bar while the other three died en route to the hospital or upon arriving.

In all, 14 people were killed Thursday, Sandoval told CNN. The other four were killed in separate shootings throughout the city, he said in a phone interview.

3. every once in a while I look in at DU
kinda hoping for some of the old intelligent discussion.

Sorely disappointed, I always am.

Also from the article:
On Tuesday, an investigator for the state police was killed alongside her 5-year-old daughter.

I know it might be difficult to drum up the appropriate outrage and compassion on a daily basis, and be constantly self-examining and speaking out about how one's own country contributes to this horror show and calling for appropriate domestic measures. (I'm thinking of the demand for drugs and the supply of firearms.)

But I dunno, if one doesn't feel like having something meaningful to say ...

5. Seems like the discussions have sort of settled on a general consensus
regarding Mexico: America needs to legalize drugs, to some degree. The intelligent discussion seems to usually center around which drugs, and what the social consequences might be. And; there are certainly those who are absolutely against any drug legalization, but I think them in a distinct minority.

I don't know what else to argue. The supply of guns/weapons from the US to Mexico certainly comes through non-governmental sources (and the ill-advised stealth program recently exposed where ATF was sending "traceable" guns into Mexico) but I am of the understanding that much of what the drug cartels fight with originates with weapons sales/transfers to the Mexican military/law enforcement, from whence a certain amount ends up on the black market.

We've discussed it here; I don't know what to do about it other than continuing to lobby my representatives for marijuana legalization.

7. There is another little thing we could do.
We could discourage our government from helping the oligarchs steal elections from the reformers.
