Gabrielle Giffords is now talking on phone, intern says
Source: The Arizona Republic

Daniel Hernandez, the intern who went to the aid of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords after she was shot, said Friday that he has talked to the congresswoman several times on the phone and is amazed by her recovery.

Hernandez said the phone calls - the most recent was Wednesday - have included "short interactions and long interactions."

He declined to say specifically what Giffords has said "out of respect for her privacy."

But, he said, "pretty soon you will be able to ask her yourself because she's just doing extremely well and recovering very quickly."

22. She knows that she was shot.
Not sure she knows about the others yet. She's finding out gradually what happened.

11. This is one very exceptional woman
She has always been someone special before she was shot, and is making a recovery that lives up to that.
Obviously, she was lucky, but beyond that, her spirit and determination have truly been an inspiration.

At New Year's 2009/2010, as were all packing up to go to bed, she pleaded for her favorite song, "American
Pie," so one guy got out his iPhone and found the lyrics, and I knew the chords, so she stood over his
shoulder and they sang the song while I played on the 12-string.

What song did she ask for as soon as she could put the words together after the shooting? "American Pie,"
of course! Not even a bullet in the brain could get that song out of her mind. That's how she is.

16. Almost devine, when you think about it.
I'm glad the media give her recovery as much attention as they do to attention seekers like the idiot who shot her, whatever his name was.

17. She's a public servant and her husbands wish for privacy
should have nothing to do with what her constituents deserve to legally know and then plan accordingly.
If she was a private citizen then she is entitled to her privacy, but she is not.
I'm finding all this ridicules spin about her condition is becoming a bit too self-serving by those around her as trying to make it seem that she's going to regain her political career very soon.
She has been severely injured and her recovery is what matters, not her political career.
There was a recent post here on DU about how difficult it is now that no one in Az can declare their candidacy for her seat and a Senate seat because her camp and supporters have this great hope that she'll be back by then.
So there's all the whispering and confusion behind the scenes which no one has had the political intelligence and guts to come forward and publicly acknowledge or address,is it because they would be perceived as insensitive to her situation and injuries/recovery?
Reading many of the comments here one would think that she held a press conference and her return to politics was a sure thing.
All we were told was that some people spoke with her and didn't wish to comment to protect her privacy, then why the hell bother telling us?

28. enough grouching
If I remember correctly, her skull fragment is not yet back in place. If I were her, as a woman, I'd want that done and some hair grown back before I made my public debut.

People are updating the public on her situation. And public figures ARE entitled to some degree of privacy.

30. I agree, I'm not saying that she should make an appearance
by any means, or her have any of her voice communications publicly aired.
My issue is with her political future and are these updates on her condition supposed to indicate she'll be back soon as their Rep and also there are people around her now saying to the media that she also had mentioned a possible Az Senate run.
Her political career needs to be addressed ,that was the point of my comments.
