New Hampshire congressman calls Catholic bishop a 'pedophile pimp'
Source: cnn

(CNN) -- The New Hampshire House majority leader lashed out Friday on his Facebook page at a Roman Catholic bishop, calling the clergyman a "pedophile pimp" who "has no moral credibility to lecture anyone."

The comments come in the wake of a rally Thursday where John McCormack, who is bishop of the Roman Catholic Manchester Diocese, criticized state budget cuts that he argued would hurt "the most vulnerable in our society," according to a transcript of his remarks posted on the diocese's website.

State Rep. D.J. Bettencourt responded with a Facebook post Friday morning that said, "Would the Bishop like to discuss his history of protecting the 'vulnerable?' This man is a pedophile pimp who should have been led away from the State House in handcuffs with a rain coat over his head in disgrace. He has absolutely no moral credibility to lecture anyone."

Critics called on McCormack to resign as bishop in 2003 when the Diocese of Manchester settled more than 170 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by priests in New Hampshire, though he stayed put.

1. A politician commits truthiness! I wish they all would react this way when lectured by catholic
bishops or the pope.

5. This Bishop is a good man
There are millions of catholics just like there are millions of americans.

I guess you should be held accountable and judged in the same vein because Bush was your president for 8 years. Look all that he did, and no one stopped him.

7. This bishop passed known pedophile priests from parish to parish, to abuse children again and again.
He does not qualify to be called a good man.

The rally should have found a respectable religious leader to speak at the event. From comments I've read at another site, many of the Democrats in the crowd made comments similar to Bettencourt's when McCormac was introduced.

I specifically criticized the heirarchy of the catholic church in my post. Their actions disqualify them as moral spokesmen, in my strongly-held view.

If you wish to take that criticism upon yourself, as an individual catholic, that is your choice. But, since you did, I will say that it baffles me why catholics continue to fund the church in spite of the heirarchy's in-your-face promotions of those responsible for enabling and covering up child abuse.

I voted twice against Bush. What have individual catholics done to rid themselves of these law-defying enablers of child abuse? Why do catholics call such moral reprobates 'prince'? I truly don't understand.

Of course, it's none of my business how catholics run their church, since I'm not catholic. It's only when known abuse enablers step forward as moral spokesmen in the political arena that my hackles are raised. I hate to see Democratic politicians consult them on any subject, and I think they should be laughed or booed off the stage, any time they appear.

9. I don't know where you get your information that the Bishop knowingly passed pedophiles

That is terrible if that could be proved, which I really don't know who knew what and didn't know what - or if he tried to do something about it, but could not.

It is terrible. But the truth of the matter is, most catholics until recently had no idea and could not do anything about it. Now that they know, they are doing something about it.

So, you voted twice against Bush - big deal. Look at all the horribleness Americans do against the poor and middle class - the education system, health care, social programs, causing wars around the world - all in the name of corporations and their tax breaks and money-making machines. You have no right to speak with hatred against a group of people who do so good in the country and the world. If it were not for catholics, a lot of people would starve, and have no health care, shelter or education. They helped me and educated me.

In this case, the Bishop spoke the truth. And I couldn't care less what you think. You are American, and thus have committed great atrocities too because of your leaders and I hold you accountable because you should have done more.

10. hmm I will have to agree he was a pimp
McCormack was one of Cardinal Law’s henchmen in Boston, serving from 1984 until 1994 as his Secretary for Ministerial Personnel–which made him the point person for dealing with priests charged with sexual abuse.

Thats from a religious website. The man was directly responsible for shuffling pedophile priests.

Now the puke that said it is no doubt a shit himself but you know what they say about people living in glass houses throwing stones.

11. More on this pimp
This guy should be in jail not lecturing anyone on morality at any time ever. No offense to Catholics but this guy should be defrocked not raised to bishop. It is this kind of behavior by the Catholic leadership that is giving catholics a bad name.

But the Rev. John B. McCormack, then the top church official handling the complaints for Cardinal Bernard F. Law, insisted on shielding the identities of accused priests from unsuspecting parishioners - despite the repeated pleas of his top aide who fielded complaints about more than 100 priests.

In five days of pretrial testimony released yesterday, McCormack said that he and a small group of church officials, including the chief legal counsel for the archdiocese, decided to keep the names of accused priests secret ''to avoid scandalizing people about the sexual abuse committed by clergy.''

2. That is beside the point. When the Church promotes social justice, the right gets mean.
And yet, when it comes to abortion, the Church can do no wrong.

3. Cognitive Dissonance
The rich are always mean, but they sure do bare their teeth when threatened with social justice.

But, the Bishop/Cardinal? should have stepped down and spent time with his god, asking for forgiveness. All of them are self righteous asshats.

8. And a mob of howling Catholics burns down a local Democratic office
So clearly we should ban this type of "hate speech". Because "speech has consequences".

More seriously, I had no idea that NH politics were this, um, vibrant.
