Rep. Heinrich running for Senate

SANTA FE, N.M., April 2 (UPI) -- Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., announced Saturday he is running for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Jeff Bingaman, who is retiring.

Several Republicans have already announced, Roll Call reported. They include former Rep. Heather Wilson, who left the seat Heinrich now holds in 2008 to make an unsuccessful run for the Republican nomination for the Senate.

Heinrich announced his candidacy on Facebook and on his campaign Web site, saying he arrived at the decision after discussing "at length with my family how I might best continue to serve New Mexico."

"After much serious thought, I am excited to announce today that I will be a candidate for the United States Senate," he said.

Now we can hope for an all-out, knockout brawl between Heather and Pearce that will tarnish the GOP again and ease the way for Heinrich. :-)

OT; noticed the dispatch is datelined UPI Santa Fe. I doubt UPI has an office in Santa, as it is down to a handful of staffers in D.C. I do not know of a single newspaper in the United States that still publishes UPI stories.
