Sources: Mubarak has left Egypt
Source: Al Jazeera English

Sources tell Al Jazeera that Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, has left the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh on a flight headed to Germany, possibly for medical treatment.

Mubarak had been staying at Sharm El-Sheikh under house arrest since he stepped down from office on February 11.

Protesters have called for Mubarak to stand trial for alleged crimes under his presidency.

3. The end of that article says the US is helping Mubarak to get out of Egypt
"And in February, German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that Mubarak's trip to Germany would be part of a long-term plan hatched by the US as an exit strategy for Mubarak.

The United States government's scenario for an end to the political chaos in Egypt appears to be this: President Hosni Mubarak travels to Germany for a "prolonged health check" that would offer the 82-year-old a dignified departure."

The news had just broke and that was the extent of it at the time. I should have checked back before my time limit ran out, but I was off watching vids in the videos forum.

Weird though. Why Germany, of all places?

6. I don't know, Germany just seems really random to me.
I'd have thought maybe he'd just buy a private tropical island somewhere and vanish.

He's surely got enough emergency cash stashed away to do that.

7. Ostensibly: Because that's where his doctors are. (He's visited them before.)

8. Right, but I was sort of responding to the Der Spiegel thing upthread
Which makes Germany sound like his final destination, as it were.
