Obama kicks off 2012 re-election campaign

WASHINGTON | Mon Apr 4, 2011 6:13am EDT

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday opened his 2012 re-election campaign with a website announcement and e-mails and text messages to supporters.

"This campaign is just kicking off," a short announcement said on www.barackobama.com. "We're opening up offices, unpacking boxes and starting a conversation with supporters like you to help shape our path to victory. 2012 begins now..."

The two-minute, 10-second video on the site featured supporters from around the country discussing their support for the Democratic president.

Political observers expect the Obama campaign to raise an unprecedented $1 billion for the race.

1. "We're opening up offices, unpacking boxes and starting
a conversation with supporters like you to help shape our path to victory. 2012 begins now..."

The first two things should go swimmingly, but for this tone deaf administration, the third one is going to be a real surprise, I'm guessing.

Can't wait to see what the conversation between Obama and _________________ CEO is going to look like. Assuming, of course, that we even get invited to listen in.

50. You didn't participate these last two years; I did
I spent quite a bit of time working with OFA (former Obama for America morphed into Organizing for America after the 08 elections). We made calls for health care, showed up at Rep. Melissa Bean's office to persuade her to vote for the bill, worked on repealing DADT, did work for the 2010 senate and house elections, etc.

You only think his supporters were toobigtofail bankers. You're wrong. At the OFA office here, I worked with senior citizens, young people, a lot of African Americans from the "communities", etc.

When you sit at your computer all day armchair criticizing, it's easy to throw around platitudes. But if you actually get on the ground and do some work, you realize that DU is not representative of the American public.

55. frazzled, I participated. I emailed, I called, I showed up at my Senator's office,
showed up at Town Hall meetings with my signs and 'debated' Teabaggers, bugged the shit out of my Rep and Senators, wrote the President time and again until I just gave up out of frustration that his administration was not working for the working class or the middle class. That's when I told the OFA and the DCCC to take me off their list. All I ever got from them were platitudes about how the President was working for me. I'm not blind. And I know bullshit when it's presented to me as 'facts'.

"At least we're not Republicans" is not a campaign slogan that is going to win many voters.

When push comes to shove however, your mantra suggesting that there's little difference between the parties doesn't amount to a hill of beans when you consider things like Republican Paul Ryan's proposal to abolish Medicare.

As for me, I qualify for Medicare in the not-too-distant future. I am terrified what these Republicans are up to. And I'm damned if I'm going to let people's platitudes get in the way of my saving it.

ON EDIT: and if we don't elect a Democrat in 2012, I will definitely blame those "idealists" who thought the Democrats were not good enough for them. I will hold them personally responsible for the loss of Democratic programs like Medicare.

62. Blame away, frazzled. Nothing is going to get done until a d
Democratic renaissance occurs and that's not going to happen with the current DLC elites in power.

If the President had gone with the public's ideas about Medicare--making it available to ALL Americans--we wouldn't even be having this acrimonious debate. He abandoned us. We deserve better.

65. Nothing is going to happen until we get rid of capitalism -
I was a volunteer down here in Brazoria County, Texas - especially active during the primary (knocking on doors, phone-banking, "fired up - ready to go" - all of it).

And I have seen exactly what Obama has been able to do - very little (I'll give him DADT and Lily Ledbetter, but nothing of substance economically). And that is because it is not "we" who hired him. He works for the very wealthy and he knows it. Just took ME awhile to see it.

Good luck to those of you who still buy into it (and I don't mean you Bertman, I'm speaking of the other person you're corresponding with in this thread). The cuts to Medicare are going to come with a democrat in office. You can bank on it.

And I totally agree with your appraisal. I'll vote for Obama over some republican. But he sure didn't "dance with the ones who brung him" to the party, if you get my drift.

Now, he wants us to be suckers all over again.

Fffttt.

107. Obama hasn't really even tried.
He immediately started rewarding his corporate donors with cushy appointments, while his staff denigrated progressives as "retards". He has continued, even exceeded Bush policies on indefinite detention.
He in many cases has done the complete opposite of what he claimed he would do during the campaign. He LIED. And we all fell for it. I am not falling for it this time. I am not voting for him. I will stay home or write in someone else.

66. Reelecting Obama is not electing a Democrat in 2012
He is at best a semi-moderate Repub, but has outdone even Bush in Pakistan and assaulting whistleblowers, for example. That party has gone off the deep end, yes, but Obama has legitimized them by giving in to their demands time after time. He is so aligned with them they have to make stuff up about him to oppose. What in Obama's history makes you think he will fight Repubs to protect your Medicare? Before you blame 'idealists' for electing a Republican, you better look in the mirror because that's what you yourself are doing, whether you realize it or not.

If you get my meaning. Every year, when I have to do my self evaluation for work, my husband talks me out of putting "Didn't off any of my coworkers" as one of my yearly achievements. DU lets the steam escape.

106. let's see,
during the run up to the election of 2008, I was street talking our candidate up due to my feelings that he, President Obama was going to take our country in a completely different direction, I registered 35 new Democratic party voters, I did not phone bank due to work issues, I offered and took people to vote on November 8, it was only 6 people but they would not have gotten there unless I furnished the transportation. I spent enough of my mental stability explaining why we as a country needed to change the way things were going as far as the wars, healthcare, and employment.

I don't know if that meets your standards but if not, too bad.

10. Whoever is in charge of slogans needs to be re-assigned.
"Don't give them back the keys" was a mid-term disaster.

"Win The Future"="WTF" :wtf:

(Can't believe EVERYone in the WH and the DLC/DNC missed "WTF" until after-- wait for it--Sarah Palin--quickly picked up on it.)

"'It' 'begins' with us" seems too vague to fire up folks. We don't know what "it" is, nor where "it" is heading.

Besides, talking about BEGINNING when you are running for your SECOND term does not seem like genius,, either.

IMO, we are very lucky Obama is so personally magnetic and the Republican field so far is so lame.

9. omg is that seriously a campaign poster? really?
How perfect!!! It shows how he has turned his back on so many issues affecting us. A public option, mortgage assistance, the failing economy, jobs, fighting for the unions, getting us out of these ridiculous wars.

Yeah he kept a few promises, but for the most part he turned his back while the corporations took over and the middle class disappeared.

This is a perfect campaign poster - the image says it all about this President - he has turned his back on us.

It says Get His Back. It shows that people need to stand up for the Democratic President and make sure he is reelected. There is nothing negative about the image. The snark attributed to it isn't my problem.

A Democrat, not a Right of Center Republican Lite, of which we have now.
At the very least, we need someone in the middle to stand up for the average citizen. That ain't Obama.

The fact that this country is way far to the right, has warped peoples perceptions of what really is Left, Center and Right.

And, de facto, fewer, if any, are getting discharged, even if "out." Hearings, yes--and that's bad--but at least careers are not ending wholesale anymore.

39. Funny you should say that.
Here's my response to the E-mail I got from him today:

With all due respect to your office, Mr .President, I'm liberal, middle class, and a Vet. You threw me and people like me under the bus as soon as you got elected. Why don't you send this to your wealthy republican" friends". I'm sure they'll be wanting to donate to your campaign, you know, in a bi-partisan sort of way, and God knows, they are much better off financially than I am. After all, my income has been frozen, but they got massive tax breaks (again). In the meantime, I'll be donating what little bit I have to real progressives, that is, unless the government shuts down and I don't get my Navy retirement or social security checks.

I sincerely though our long national nightmare was over when you were elected, and I cried tears of joy and relief when it was announced that you had won. Little did I know that you were going to continue and even double down on some of George Bush's most abhorrent policies, and that not only was the nightmare not over, it was only just beginning.

I'm 65 years old, and cannot remember when I've been so disappointed in a politician. Every time I think about the disparity between Candidate Obama and President Obama, I get ill. If I were a republican operative, I'd just put up a split screen showing the "before and after". Nothing else would be necessary, and I'd be able to save a ton of advertising money. I can only say that you are quite fortunate that the republicans have such a plethora of certifiably insane people running; otherwise, you'd defeat yourself!

So much promise: squandered, overwhelming mandate: squandered, hope and change: squandered. I cannot even begin to tell you how disappointed and sad this makes me. I wish you well, but my personal code of ethics will not allow me to actively support someone who misrepresents himself in such an egregious manner.

(I'll vote for him if he's the candidate, but he's not getting one minute of my time or one penny of my money.)

I just read a speech made by Obama in 2007 about the war in Iraq. It was moving and so correct in every way. And at the same time, I read a more recent speech of his, directly contradicting what he said in 2007. It was like reading a debate between a democrat and a republican. However, I'm glad I went back and read it because at least I know why I supported him back then.

I thought the WH didn't need the 'professional left' to win btw. Didn't they say they would be 'spending millions' to 'recruit a whole new set of voters'?

But after all the 'bi-partisanship' they engaged in, only 9% of Republicans view this president positively. He has lost Independents in his pursuit of approval from the right. And the numbers show what a huge political mistake that was.

among Democrats.

A few weeks ago I ran into a young man who saw my Veterans for Obama sticker on my car. (He and I live in a blue area of a red state) He said to me: "I'm a vet too. I was a staffer for the Obama Campaign. All of my friends have taken their Obama stickers off their cars because they're so unhappy with the President."

That was totally unsolicited.

P.S. I still have the Veterans for Obama sticker on my car just because I like to piss off the right-wingers who still think he's a socialist, muslin, Kenyan. It's NOT because I support him or the vast majority of his actions since taking office.

I was excited to sign up this morning to volunteer again for Obama's campaign. I've already exchanged emails with people that I worked with last election who are just as enthusiastic this time around.

I live in the reddest area of a red state. I have an Obama sticker on my car and often wear my Obama T-shirts. Other than an occasional eye roll or giggle, no one has ever hassled me about them.

I'm sorry, I'll try to get more enthusiastic as 2012 approaches. I know he is the only game in town but I sure wish we could be more effective in getting our voices heard and having him take us seriously rather than always talking down to us. It is as if he has some of our values but he serves the other side rather than us. I am somewhat surprised at how poorly his presidency has turned out. But yes, this is "within the family". I try not to let my disappointment go beyond those confines.

67. checklist
1. End war in Iraq: Fail. Starts war with Libya.

2. Help the environment before global catastrophe from global warming: Zero.

3. Build jobs: Zero. Outsourcing to countries with no pollution control expenses and slave labor wages - not a thing done about it.

4. Healthcare: Denies promise about public option until embarrassing video shows up. Passes healthcare bill with holes in it a truck could drive through. (I was looking forward to the 50% cut in med prices in the donut hole, until the manufacturers of my meds raised prices almost 100%.)

5. Medicare/Social Security: Open to cuts, sets up panel with foes of both programs on it.

6. Pledges to close Guantanamo: Fail. Okays torture of Manning.

7. Constitution: Spits on it with continued torture and other massive civil rights violations. Declared war without Senate approval.

For years my friends on the far left told me there was no difference between the parties, and I told them they were crazy. Now I know they weren't.

I'd like to think if the Democrats lose enough elections they'd remember they're Democrats, but I think TPTB will just decide they should move further right. Nonetheless, in 2012 I'm writing in Bernie Sanders and Howard Dean, in an as yet undetermined order,

69. I surrender. I wanted to use my donations and volunteer time as a
weapon to make the Democratic Party understand how angry I was. But you know what? When I do that I am just cutting off my nose to spite my face. As of this moment I surrender. No this last year has been less than I expected and less than I wanted but I am honest enough to realize that it was still better than what I had in the booosh years. So I am going to start donating again - either to the national party or once again to specific Democrats who share my values and I will volunteer to where needed.

In return for my surrender I want a Democrat president who has a Democrat congress (House and Senate) behind him. But I want President Obama to know this next term I am expecting more of him also. I want the congress to know that I expect them to work together (screw the rethugs) for the things that are needed to secure our future.

81. Not necessarily. That's the dilemma they want you to fear.
Sure it will suck, but if enough of the liberal base abandons the party that has long ago abandoned us, then there are two possible solutions: 1.) the party will swing back to a more progressive base to re-attract members; or 2.) a new party will be formed to satisfy the hoards of disinfranchised progressive voters.

Our complacency to be forced to vote for the lesser of two evils only perpetuates the status quo.

severely disabled daughter to consider. If they are allowed to take our medical programs away because we want to teach the democrats a lesson she dies. Literally.

Why?

We ain't getting shit as it is...

I don't think USAmericans are going to do anything about it until they feel the same level of pain as the Egyptians and Tunisians did...

Just let the REAL Republicans run the oxcart into the ditch for once and for all and quickly...

120. Because that is the only way we can use the veto and at least hope
to stop some of this. If we let them have it all back there is no hope of saving anything. Oh sure America might wake up but for a great deal of people in line for the rethug death panels it will be too late. The daughter I am worried about is not just ill she is one of many developmentally disabled persons who this would effect drastically. I have lobbied for the programs that help this group for years. If we let them have government back in their hands and we lose these programs they will place this group back into institutions where they can let them die like they used to do. People like my daughter do not fit into their perfect little world. That is why I will work my ass off for victory in 2012.

If by any chance you think that working for Democrats will make me less likely to lobby for the issues I want then you are wrong. But I also know that first before I can succeed we need to keep the government in our hands. I promise I would be the first person to vote for a third party candidate if I thought they had a chance in hell of winning but they do not. So I take what I can get and work to make it better.

What I will not do is blame everything on President Obama. He received one of the biggest messes this country has ever been in when he was elected. He did not get the large majorities he needed in congress to make the changes even if he meant to. And a lot of people on this board absolutely ignore the things he was able to do. Especially getting a health care bill passed when no president since Truman has been able to. No it is not perfect but it is a start. I was around when Social Security was passed - it was not perfect either. We fixed it and we are going to have to raise the caps to fix it again. But none of this will happen if we cannot keep government in our hands. That is why.

91. Quite a list
and not one to be proud of. Reminds me of the bumper-sticker I had during the * years, "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." Too bad this time around it applies to a "Dem" president.

BTW - Hope your hand is better soon.

94. The Democratic Party has traditionally been identified . . .
. . . as standing up for the "little guy," the "working man," the blue-collar laborer or even small-business owner. The Republican Party, meanwhile, has traditionally been seen as the party of corporate fat cats and other wealthy people.

However, I think it is becoming harder and harder for Americans to see such a distinction between the parties. While the Republicans continue to be seen as the party of the rich, the Democrats are not seen as being much different. Sure, Democrats may protect Social Security and Medicare, but who even among the Republicans really has the balls to go out and fight against either of those largely popular programs? More telling, though, is the fact that if Pres. Obama is going to raise $1 billion for his re-election, he will not be getting the bulk of it from $5 and $10 donations. It will instead come from very wealthy people, corporations, "foundations," and other sources that will (and already do) have his ear.

My guess is that unless the Republicans nominate somebody particularly polarizing, there will be a lot of apathy in the 2012 election, meaning that Obama may get re-elected only if nobody else really is all that interested in the job--or they're scared off by all the money he will have raised. It won't be because Obama has appealed to the middle-class, blue-collar base of the Democratic Party.

104. Actually, if you check history
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 03:41 PM by ProudDad
the Democrats were the pro-slavery party who prematurely ended Reconstruction and brought in and perpetuated Jim Crow in the South...

Who precipitated nearly every war that USAmerica has been engaged in since the early 20th Century...

Who amplified the class struggle to the benefit of the plutocrat class while locking up pro-worker dissidents (Wilson)...

Vietnam...

Who signed NAFTA, GATT, gave away the farm to media conglomerates and began the acceleration of the National Security State and domestic spying? (hint: begins with Willie)...

Oh, yeah, those Democrats have really been good to us... :sarcasm:

They've taken our money and our labor and given us the lesser of two evils -- which is STILL EVIL!

110. A BILLION DOLLARS?!
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 06:54 PM by Countdown_3_2_1
"Political observers expect the Obama campaign to raise an unprecedented $1 billion for the race."

Who needs a BILLION FRIGGIN DOLLARS just to run a campaign? Can you imagine the non-stop commercials that would buy?

a Billion worth of commercials would be overkill.
A) it would drive people away. Who wants to vote for a Billion dollar corporate candidate?
B) It could convince people Obama was winning and they would stay away from the polls.

if the price tag for a campaign is a Billion bucks...just hand the presidency over to a corporate entity and lets be done with it. It will make my vote easier if I can choose between a couple of fortune 500 corps.

If the president gets that much, he should give half to the Democratic Party so we can get the house and senate back.

edit to add. Bragging about getting a billion dollars on the first day of the campaign means Obama doesn't need my paltry contributions.

Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 11:25 PM by Mickeyc1004
Honestly, I'm sure I'll get a lot of discontent for this, but first, I can not believe people are saying the republicans would be the same.

Republicans haven't been in office a minute and look what they are doing?

It is true the democrats could have done more including voting on a budget, but the truth is this country does not have the same unrealistic views as the vast majority of people who are on DU these days. Democrats were afraid of being fired which of course resulted in them being fired.

The county is NOT ultra liberal. I am but I recognize and speak to people who are not everyday and I live in a blue state. I don't even want to say what it was like when I lived in a red state.

Obama did the best he could and he did way better standing up to republicans than Clinton ever did, and don't get me wrong, I voted for and I'm very fond of Clinton, but the Clintons are true conservative democrats and were way too afraid of losing the South.

Clinton relented on food stamps and many programs that helped the middle class. Obama and democrats tried to help the unemployed and the poor.

I for one benefited from these programs when I was unemployed and training is what helped me get back into the job market.

Had republicans kept a majority, they would never have been for that.

Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 12:15 AM by mvd
A President shouldn't be a Bush-like imperial President, but he should be a leader and stick to certain principles. A public option, closing Guantanamo, not extending tax cuts for the rich, having more progressive people in his cabinet, cracking down on bankers, and fewer compromises would have been good. Sometimes I think he's condescending to his base, and that's not good. He governs more like a "new Democrat" than a progressive. That said, there ARE clear differences between him and a Repuke. The Supreme Court, a short Libya strike, keeping funding up for essential services, and DADT repeal are just some. He gets a B-/C+ depending on my mood, but a Repuke would be F---.
