Schumer To Boehner: Posture All You Want -- We Got You
Source: Talking Points Memo

If you're John Boehner, you really hate Chuck Schumer right now. Schumer responded to the latest government shutdown contretemps by calling the House Speaker's posture a phony dance for the Tea Party.

"A compromise on the budget is right there for the taking, assuming the Speaker still wants one," Schumer said in a statement to reporters. "We take it for granted that because of the intense political pressure being applied by the Tea Party, the Speaker needs to play an outside game as well as an inside game. As long as he continues to negotiate, it's OK by us if he needs to strike a different pose publicly."

Contra the GOP, Schumer says Boehner has agreed to a spending cut number privately, and just needs to find a way to make the medicine go down with members of his own party.

"At this point, we are so far down the road towards an agreement, and so little time remains before Friday's deadline, that it would be a dramatic about-face for the Speaker to suddenly let things devolve into a shutdown, as many in the Tea Party are urging," Schumer said.

2. My income is entirely dependent on my military retirement and social security.
If the gov't shuts down, I am going to be one very unhappy camper. CNN is reporting that AD military won't be paid on time(including those in war zones), although they will receive back pay once the dust settles; however, that won't pay the rent or put food on the table. This is NOT good. :grr: :grr: :grr:

5. Government shut downs in the past do not affect Soc. Sec.
Post office, etc.
Are you SURE about the military pay thing?
Maybe there is a way to double check???

12. Pelosi said they may be delayed or not go out in the last set of squabbles:
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 07:08 PM by freshwest
A snip from a story comparing the last one to this one and the concerns of many that may be left without income:

What Would a Government Shutdown Really Mean?
Based on the last one: layoffs, delayed checks, interrupted services

"...Social security checks: Checks were still mailed, but many government payments were delayed thanks to a lack of employees on the job. (Social security checks will be delayed if the government shuts down next month, President Obama and Nancy Pelosi have warned.)..."

http://www.newser.com/story/112473/what-would-a-government-shutdown-really-mean.html

I read posts some time back here on DU where people who worked these jobs wrote about having to work a month at a time with no pay. And I know that right now they have so many people on furlough for a day or more a week, that those who desperately need to have their benefits begun, can't get them done.

We can't forget that when the American based international bankers decided to forced some Latin American countries to make 'austerity' measures in the past, those who were dependent on their pensions from the government were NOT paid. And believe me the GOP Tea Party are drooling at the mouth to do that here, too. It's their Randian paradise, so long as they have resources to wait it out.

But what the American based bankers did was miles away, so the American people didn't see the fallout, the deaths, the protests, the lawlessness that ensued at that and other institutions of a modern society were cut off. Electricity, water, fuel, etc. I've talked with people who underwent this, and some barely survived.

The solution their country implemented after that was to nationalize almost everything and give everyone government infrastructure jobs, tell the American bankers to go to hell, etc. But we've got reactionary forces determined to stop the American people from taking such common sense and humane approaches.

Remember that you will be given notice, this may not happen, and that there are many fighting to stop this occuring, like Schumer.

13. He already did use the word 'extreme,' it was reported on DU, and when questioned by the media,
He did not back down one bit. He's slapping them in the face for playing politics with the rightful anxieties of millions of Americans for whom their limited social services are their only lifeline.

6. I don't think the pubs are dancing for the teaparty
They're doing exactly what they have been planning to do. Increase the debt to justify breaking labor and cutting public programs. They just created the Tea Party to put a public face on it. If anything, the Tea Party is dancing for the republicans.

9. That would be fine with me. The only complication is - we might be left dealing with,
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 06:11 PM by calimary
and hearing from, that smug, smarmy-ass, arrogant, swaggering eric cantor, who you know has already tied a bib on, he's so eager to see boner weakened and taking a loss on this, so he can grab the Speaker's job out from under boner.

That would be obnoxious!

eric cantor makes me :puke:

10. Wish Schumer and Reid would agree on tp
Reid said the number of tp's is low, indicating empty barrels. Schumer says their impact is intense. It'd be better if he and Reid both say it's a few big mouths blabbing away. Course, I didn't see any of this on msm, just more blabbing about tp.

15. That's not good negotiation strategy because..
they are settling for the Repukes' original number. I even learned playing a video game as a kid that you start high or in this case low. However, this compromise, as long as it doesn't hurt things like Social Security, Medicare, or education, bothers me less than usual if Boehner is in a bind because of the Teabaggers.

17. In keeping with the right wing crap
This is an America Killing Republican Budget!

We can see the start of Republican forced Death Panels, right Scott?

Wait to see if the repukes don't try to rebuild a Cabrini Green for the poor masses yearning to be free. Meanwhile, the mansionization by the rich moves ahead.

Our local puke Buck McKeon is lamenting that our Boomers will not have an extra two missle tubes or the F-22 will not have an extra engine. Asshole!
