National Association of Charter School Authorizers to run DPS charter school conversion

A national organization that helped to set up charter schools in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina will help Detroit Public Schools in an unprecedented effort to convert as many as 45 schools to charter schools by fall.

Under an agreement announced today, the National Association of Charter School Authorizers will take on wide responsibilities for the DPS Renaissance 2012 initiative.

The organization will evaluate applications from charter schools organizations that wish to operate one or more of the schools and make recommendations to DPS by June. NACSA also will monitor the start-up activities of the approved providers.

Proposals from successful charter school networks that currently operate at least two schools in Michigan will be fully considered this year while other applicants will be asked to apply to start a school in the fall of 2012, DPS announced.
