Lesbian Judge Chosen for Top Massachusetts Court
Source: The New York Times

BOSTON — Gov. Deval Patrick on Monday nominated a lesbian who is married to her partner to serve on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.

The nominee, Barbara A. Lenk, is the longest-serving justice on the state’s Court of Appeals. If confirmed, she would be the first openly gay member of the state’s highest court, which was the first in the nation to rule same-sex marriage legal in 2003.

Mr. Patrick, a Democrat who recently appointed the court’s first Asian-American justice and black chief justice, said it was “a nice coincidence” that Justice Lenk was another history-making choice.

3. When the first word of the headline describes her sexual orientation, there's something wrong.
That kind of information belongs in the third or fourth paragraph, after her academic credentials and career accomplishments. (If it belongs anywhere at all.)

6. Exactly what I was thinking
but the fact that this happened and is news means we are one step closer to a world in which no one cares about it.

7. As long as she recuses herself from GLBT-related cases.
After all, only straight people should decide if gay people get rights. Just ask the GOP.

I await the inevitable Wrath of God® on the state for openly defying God's Will®. Annnnnny year now.

8. What has her sexuality to do with anything?
It has no bearing upon her abilities as a Justice or her morality or her ability to serve. Would the paper also have this headline at other times?
