Obama calls meeting (tonight) with congressional leaders in effort to avoid shutdown
Source: cbs

President Obama has invited House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to meet with him at the White House at 8:45 p.m. this evening in an attempt to avert the government shutdown that will begin if a budget deal is not worked out by Friday.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the president called the meeting because he "decided that not enough progress has been made."

Vice President Biden will also be present at the meeting.

A White House official told CBS News the invitation was precipitated by two events. The first was Boehner indicating that he will call for a vote on a measure to fund the government for another week. Lawmakers have passed a pair of short-resolutions to keep the government running while they've debated a budget bill to last for the rest of the fiscal year, but President Obama said he will not accept another such bill.

4. Obama made a good point today. You can't run an organization, plan, set policies, etc.
1 or 2 weeks at a time.

8. A one year plan
is pretty short-sighted as well.

I'd wager there are a good number of folks here at DU that have long-term financial, career and personal goals - 5 year, 10 year, 30 year, lifetime goals - and a plan to reach them.

Too bad out dear leaders lack the discipline to make and adhere to such a plan.

14. Yeah, he's great at platitudes
I am very pessimistic about who's going to "give" the most in this impasse.

16. I thought the comment, in and of itself, was on point. No organization could function efficiently
on a week by week, month by month basis. :hi:

10. Our offer is more than generous as is
I really want to avoid a shutdown, but not at the cost of hurting domestic spending too much, or allowing these extremist riders they want in.

9. It's anyone' guess at this point, but a local Dem representative today predicted...
that there will be yet another week long budget, and that the shut-down threat will be put-off yet again, until about Palm Sunday, if no final resolution can be reached before then.

17. 8:45pm? A little late for a meeting.
I'm starting to slow down around that time.
