BP buys east beach of Cat Island
Source: Clarion Ledger

A spokesman for BP says the company has bought part of Cat Island that includes the east-facing beach.

BP spokesman Ray Melick tells The Sun Herald that the land was bought from the Boddie family, which owes a large area of the barrier island in the Mississippi Gulf. The purchase price was not revealed.

The island is shaped like a T, with the east-facing beach being the top of the T.

Melick says the company hasn't decided what it will do with the land, but the purchase will help it expedite cleanup of the islands in the wake of the BP oil spill.

Grrrrrrr! This makes me so mad. They should not be allowed to do this. This island has a long and storied history. There are feral dogs living there from when they trained Working Dogs for the Army in WWII. There are Native American sites and old French colonial relics all over the place.

Bad bad bad.

5. It's a buy out, like buying farms whose water will be ruined from fracking.
Edited on Fri Apr-08-11 12:12 PM by freshwest
The farmer who can no longer farm or seduced by a large sum of paper wealth, contracts with the oil industry to frack even if it destroys the use of the farmland forever, its water table.

They leave with big checks and going to live the ends of their lives elsewhere. They thumb their noses at their neighbors as they go, the ones trying to hold onto a living heritage.

As we fight over every other shiny thing they put out for us in the media, we ignore the fact they are running generations off the land.

And the ecosytem?

Well, pffft to that.

8. Sad stories in all these matters.
From fracking to the oil spills to the radioactive leaks in Japan, we are not only dooming our own species but also everything in the eco system.
