Daugaard: Let state keep Mount Rushmore open in a government shutdown
Source: Rapid City Journal

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has offered to use state resources to keep Mount Rushmore National Memorial open in the event of the federal government shutdown.

The memorial, along with all other national parks, monuments and museums, is scheduled to close if Congress doesn’t approve a law funding government by Friday night.

Daugaard said Mount Rushmore is too important – both economically and symbolically – to close.

“Because of the possible federal shutdown, we’re getting word that Mount Rushmore would not be open to the public,” said Dusty Johnson, Daugaard’s chief of staff. “Gov. Daugaard does not think that’s acceptable. It’s America’s shrine to democracy.”

1. The National Parks in general are too important
They need to be exempt from a shut down, just like the military. They are probably are most important Natural, cultural and spiritual resource.

2. Nothing needs to be shut down Re-Thug Governor Daugaard!
Call your pal, leader "sniffles" Boehner and give him a clue.
Or is it that YOU, (former Re-Thug banker) want an exception and an exemption because you are... well....just kinda special?

4. I think you've got it...yes...he does think he is special....
but here is the real rub...This is the beginning of the traveling season and there will not be that many travelers this year because of the depression and the price of gas. So all the repugs in the area who are in the tourism business have probably been begging him to "do something to help them". Of course, none of them are going to admit that the reason the 2nd largest business in the state, tourism, is going to have a lousy year because of their greedy, insane economic policies and that the Fed govt will be shut down because of the terrorists they have taken to their bosom. They did not realize when they thought they were using these nutjobs that eventually they would end up in control....The law of unintended consequences strikes again.

12. No, it is still agriculture..and those of us to choose to ...
live here are not bored. We like the solitude and the ability to get away from people entirely. However, although we do not have the kinds of choices of entertainment available in large cities, we do have many things going on all the time.

Me, I hate cities and large crowds. Even though, for the month of Aug, we have huge crowds here that I hate, I would still rather be here than any city I have lived in in the past. Of course, this year, the crowds probably won't be so large.

9. Well, I think the Corps of Engineers boat ramp I use needs to be kept open....

I mean really, I'll be hugely inconvenienced if the government shuts down the boat ramp I frequent. I won't be able to take my son fishing, and if it stays shut down for long it'll cut into our water skiing. Rushmore sushmore, my local boat ramp is WAY more important.

(note: slight :sarcasm: - IMHO ALL federally operated facilities are important and don't deserve to be a victim to politics. I don't see where one facility should get preferential treatment over another.)
