Negotiators ready to table Planned Parenthood measure?
Source: MSNBC

At this hour, it appears that negotiators are prepared to put the fight over federal funding of Planned Parenthood aside for the moment, increasing the chances of a deal to avert a government shutdown.

One GOP source says "the issue has been resolved," while a Democratic source describes the talks as "almost there" on the so-called 'rider' that has proven to be the biggest and last stumbling block to an agreement.

Still another source says that the issue is no longer on the table.

1. R's negotiate in bad faith, give them what they say they want, they move the goalposts.
This was classic - they put in riders the D's could not accept and hence wrung huge financial concessions out of the D's.

Frankly - I do not think this bodes well for the 2012 budget.

3. Moved the goalposts into a corner if you ask me
I am personally surprised that they are actually doing anything about "abortion" - they had a never ending issue that people will vote solely on. "What's the Matter with Kansas?" is basically about the role of abortion in Kansas politics and the people who are funded to keep the issue alive.

The Republicans must have been pushed from the inside (sorry that sounded like a pun) to make these moves. Usually they are fantastic at top down rhetoric and discipline but on this one they moved themselves into a corner. The only move out of a corner is straight out and it is not the Dems they have to worry about it is their own if they don't push out (again sorry that sounded like a pun).

11. Well, "underpants" I am sure you didn't intend this to be funny
but if the DUzy's were alive, I would recommend this post. All that pushing into corners and then that top down, in/out action. Whew.

14. I find it interesting that the legislative attack on Planned Parenthood
came at exactly the same time as two attempts by Lila Rose to "expose" PP like her buddy O'Keefe did with Acorn.

Lila Rose Hoax: Video Proves Planned Parenthood Lied About Providing Mammograms
Live Action: Planned Parenthood "Exposed" Lying About Mammograms. A press release accompanying Live Action's latest video purports to expose Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards as lying.

Fox's Bolling Ignores Key Fact While Promoting Lila Rose's Planned Parenthood Smear
February 22, 2011 1:31 pm ET — 30 Comments
Eric Bolling helped Lila Rose promote the falsehood that Live Action exposed Planned Parenthood covering up the sex trafficking of underage girls. Bolling ignored the fact that that Planned Parenthood had contacted the FBI to report the possibility that sex trafficking was occurring, which completely undermines Rose's claim that they are covering up sex abuse.

Also, all the attacks on unions that mushroomed up in several states. Question is, who is doing the strategizing?

Sure, the Koch brothers have been important money men, but I think the fact that Walker could be duped so easily on that phone call shows that he hadn't had much, if any, direct contact with them. The GOP demonstrates time and time again that they are a top-down organization whose lower ranks rarely make a move until the orders are issued. Boehner's certainly not capable of this kind of leadership; Michael Steele was an expendable figurehead. Who's really in the driver's seat????

15. None of this is a coincidence
Who's running it? Well in one of the most turhful quotes you will ever here from their side David Frum pretty much told the whole story with one quote (and got booted out of the circle for it):

"Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we are discovering we work for Fox."

Ailes is the king maker. but there are others too of course.

10. Rest assured, a huge environmental catastrophe is inevitable
within the next few years in the US.

People will be outraged when they discover that the Republicans and Obama basically closed down our environmental watchdog. And then, after it is too late for some, perhaps many, we will get a revitalized EPA.

I am familiar enough with the field of environmental hazards to feel certain that this will happen. There are just too many chemicals, too much toxic waste, too much sloppiness. The question is when will we find out? Without the EPA, environmental catastrophes in some states will simply be ignored.

Americans on the far West Coast tend to be pretty interested in environmental issues, but Americans elsewhere not so much.

6. Wow. You mean, putting aside differences to deal with a bigger problem....
So that you can get back to the differences... is a good idea????? Shocker.

We watch the NBA because we feel that the athletes do better than we could at what they're doing. Why do we pay attention to politicians?

7. If the GOP really wanted there to be fewer abortions in this country,
They'd fully fund Planned Parenthood.

13. Interesting piece from Ezra Klein in today's WaPo
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/what-planned-parenthood-actually-does/2011/04/06/AFhBPa2C_blog.html?fb_ref=NetworkNews

He points out that only 3% of Planned Parenthood's (PP's) activities are providing abortions, and that more than 85% of services are contraception, STD scanning and treatment and cancer screening and prevention. And, that PP has it's abortion services completely (and verifiably) firewalled from the government funding it receives.

He also describes how de-funding PP would result in increased unwanted pregnancies and unchecked STD's and cancers that would ultimately cost the government (and the whole country) a fuck of a lot more than would be saved by the de-funding, thus proving that the issue is political and not budgetary.

16. It's called systematic genocide
Cut off funding for services that help prevent unwanted pregnancies and lethal diseases, then cut off support for the resultant unwanted babies and those who contracted and rampantly spread the resultant lethal diseases = the death of multitudes. And they really don't give a damn.
