Former Sen. Rick Santorum cautions voters against Obama's presidency
Source: Los Angeles Times

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said Friday that American rights and liberties were at risk under President Obama and described his healthcare plan as part of a broader plot by Democrats to get Americans "hooked" on entitlement programs.

"You have been given a great gift in growing up and living in the greatest country in the history of the world," the Republican told several hundred home-school advocates gathered here (Santa Clara, Calif.). "But that freedom, that equality, that exceptionalism, is at stake right now in America if we do not replace the current president of the United States."

"Once they have you hooked, once they have you dependent on them for your very life, America as we know it is over," he said.

... Santorum, who with his wife has home-schooled six of his seven children, noted in his speech that he won his first race to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990 partly by mobilizing home-schoolers and opponents of abortion rights. (He lost his bid for reelection to the Senate in 2006).

2. My grandparents were "hooked" on Social Security and Medicare for
decades and lived well into their 80's. Didn't seem to have harmed them one bit.

Oh, and my mom has been hooked on the same for 10 years. Thank god. Beats hell out of joining the ranks of the homeless mentally ill on the street.

3. I was disabled in a car accident in '95.
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 01:15 AM by xxqqqzme
I was 47 at that time. I am happy I got hooked on Medicare as a result because I sure as hell couldn't afford heath insurance w/ my 'pre-existing' conditions and no job.

4. But Bill O'Reilly's heart still aches
He's always carping about how he should be able to decide through his charitable heart who gets his money. It seems to be a conservative trait to promise to help people on their own if only they weren't taxed to death. They add that they alone should decide who's in need of that precious lucre of theirs.

As if.

How about if I want to restrict my tax money from war and coal subsidies? Well, that's different they say. I'm unpatriotic.

8. Santorum: Obama's pro-choice position "almost remarkable for a black man"
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 02:23 AM by alp227
"The question is -- and this is what Barack Obama didn't want to answer -- is that human life a person under the Constitution? And Barack Obama says no. Well if that person -- human life is not a person, then -- I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say, 'we're going to decide who are people and who are not people.'" http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/01/santorum-on-obamas-abortion-views-its-remarkable-for-a-black-man-to-say-we-can-decide-whos-a-person.php

I unrec out of the stance that NO ONE SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS DUMB MAN just like how Sarah Palin is just making noise with her mouth.

Oh, for those DU downers who are feeling reluctant about voting for Obama in 2012, well would you rather have people like Santorum in the White House? (Yes, Pat Robertson might've failed in 1988, but...)

18. Santorum got his law degree when he was officially a full-time state employee
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 06:46 AM by Divernan
What a hypocrite to rant against government entitlement programs!

Santorum's father supported his family as an employee/psychologist at a VA hospital, i.e., govt. entitled health care. Rick got his bachelor's degree(1980) and MBA(1981) from two state supported universities. Then Rick took a job as a full time staff member for a Republican state senator in the state capitol. For 3 years Rick was executive director of a state senate committee on local government. For the next 3 years, until 1986, he was executive director of a state senate committee on transportation.

According to Wikipedia, "After earning his Juris Doctor, Santorum became an administrative assistant to Republican State Senator J. Doyle Corman (until 1986). He was director of the Pennsylvania Senate's local government committee from 1981 to 1984, then director of the Pennsylvania Senate's Transportation Committee until 1986."

That statement is clearly in error. He didn't receive his JD until 1986. The entry should state, after receiving his MBA, he went to work for Doyle Corman. In fact, Santorum "worked" as an executive director for the state senate for 5 years, during which same 5 years he completed a law degree.

Having worked as an executive director of a state legislative committee myself, AFTER I received my JD, I can tell you being an ED is a full time job, and when the chambers are in session, involves long hours and late nights. Yet, Santorum graduated with his law degree from Dickinson School of Law in 1986. At that time, Dickinson School of Law did NOT offer part time programs for law school.

Classes were offered during the day, on weekdays only. The schedule for 1st years was and remains: "first year program consists of required courses that include two semesters of research and writing. During their first year, 1Ls must complete courses in Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Property, Criminal Procedure and Torts."

As a former law student (3 years) and professor (2 years), I can tell you that 1 hour of class requires 3 hours of preparation/reading. First year law students (Santorum's era was pre-computerized access to case law) lived in the classroom and the law library - no way in hell any full time, 1st year students had part-time, let alone full-time jobs. During 2nd and 3rd years, people clerked in the summer, and some worked two afternoons a week for local law firms. Dickinson may have cut Santorum a deal and let him stretch out the course work for the second and third years, but first year required Monday through Friday attendance. Dickinson is located in Carlisle, PA - a good 60 minute commute from the State Capitol Building where Santorum ostensibly was working.

So how's that for a govt. entitlement? Receive a salary and very generous benefits from the state while going to law school? And his GOP godfather, Corman, must have had to hire another staff member to do the work Santorum was supposed to be doing for the state Senate.

22. PA's Ricky.................
Yes, he was home-schooling - while living in Virginia and "serving" in the Senate.
However, he charged the Penn Hills School District (Pittsburgh suburb) for cyberschool fees for his children by claiming a small house in Penn Hills as his primary residence. What a hypocritical piece of scum!:grr: :grr:

23. A 2 bdrm. house he had rented to a cousin.
He and his wife and 6 (at the time-now 7) kids lived in a posh McMansion in northern Virginia. Now he claims they "home-schooled" their kids. Doesn't Opus Dei offer a cyberschool? Either way, fine by us, Rick. As long as you are no longer ripping off the Penn Hills School District.

24. ENTITLEMENT MY ASS!!!! I've been paying social security and medicare taxes since I was 16 !!!!
These bastards that rant about "entitlements" are some of the biggest hypocrites on the face of this earth. They should take a look at TAX ENTITLEMENTS - handouts to large oil companies which are making record profits and paying little or no taxes come to mind.

Say it again - TAX ENTITLEMENTS. That's what we need to be talking about in budget debates, everyone (especially large corporations) paying their fair share.

25. Hey Rick, pay back your Pell Grants, the money you ripped off from
the PA school district (to pay for the Santorum kids' cyber-schooling) where you did NOT reside, pay back the premiums we taxpayers paid for YOUR government-funded health insurance, give up your government pension, vow not to collect Social Security and Medicare and THEN we'll talk about entitlements.

Until then, Man-on-dog needs to STFU.

Oh, and I'll add, that Rick needs to get a REAL job besides being a sleazy lobbyist for United Health Services lobbying against the public option while concealing the fact that he is a paid whore for the health care industry.

28. "...the greatest country in the history of the world" ???
I doubt that.

This clown makes it sound so easy to get Social Security and Medicaid/care, and that some one is twisting our arms to get it. Well, firstly, if your over 65 you fucking earned it and if you can wait longer to use it that is just fine, or you might be rich and may not needed it.

What empty nut sack santorum is wanting to say, is that these socialized programs are bad even though they are extremely popular and work. I want my health care socialized and that is more than possible with the taxation of the rich, corporations and cutting the pentagon budget. Corporate welfare is ok with these clowns, and their just fine fucking the people that actually need it.
