Obama at Lincoln Memorial, open after budget deal
Source: AP

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama made the short trip from the White House to the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to make clear that the country's national parks and monuments are open for business.

A deal Friday night between the White House and congressional leaders avoided a government shutdown that would have closed popular tourist sites across the country. The president greeted surprised tourists and told them, "Because Congress was able to settle its differences, that's why this place is open today and everybody's able to enjoy their visit."

"That's the kind of future cooperation I hope we have going forward," the president said.

A day after capping harrowing negotiations with a last-minute deal, the president cheerfully bounded up the steps to the imposing statue of Lincoln at the memorial on the National Mall. The quick stop was unannounced and throngs of visitors shouted and snapped photos.

Well, that photo op was worth the sellout.

15. By "Congress," do you mean Boehner, Reid and Obama? And, in fairness,

the poor were thrown under the bus, too.

Or has it become politically incorrect to care about the poor nowadays?

Did we let Republicans win that one, too, like we let them say academia is bad, lawyers are bad, "liberal" is bad and so on?

5. Guess what Republicans... he won again. People like him more than you.
which is not surprising - people don't like you (even your own people) they only fear you

Classic.

18. Good thing nothing about it is calculated or cynical or manipulative, eh? Or ironic.

I wish Obama actually had more in common with the Presidents with whom he contrives to associate himself (aside from superficialities).

Btw, Michelle has more of a link with Lincoln than does Barack, and her mom has more of a link with the civil rights struggle of the 1950's and 1960's than either Michelle or Barack. Michelle and Barack were more the affirmative action generation.

21. I'm aware of that but are you saying that all we did back in the 60s
was for nothing? I am saying that it gives me a warm feeling that we actually came from black citizens not being able to vote to being able to elect a black president. I was not applauding Obama - I was applauding the protesters from the 60s. What I am afraid of is that if Obama does not pull some real rabbits out of the hat there will never be another.
