Libya: Gaddafi government accepts peace plan, says Zuma
Source: BBC

South African President Jacob Zuma says the Libyan government has accepted an African Union peace plan to end the eight-week-old conflict.

Mr Zuma and three other African leaders met Libya's leader, Col Muammar Gaddafi, in Tripoli on Sunday. They are now going on to the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

9. Not all of them.
As an aside, the contention over which is "worse," the Arab countries or the non-Arab African countries, is counterproductive. They are different. There are severe problems in both. Both Gaddafi and the rebels are welcoming this delegation of their own wills...

"In all, the African Union mission comprises representatives from five nations: presidents Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania, Amadou Toumani Toure of Mali and Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, and Uganda's Foreign Minister Henry Oryem Okello."

Am only familiar with Zuma from South Africa...blech

3. I assume the terms in that "peace plan" are very favorable for Gaddafi
Since they are all his buddies, it's just a farce

4. Yeah, apparently it has an "inclusive transitional period."
This proposal is exactly like the one before, I'd reckon. And we know how the rebels felt about that one.

BTW The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights is the legal arm of the African Union, and they want him for "massive violations of human rights": http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=4794653#4796049

I wonder if the AU mentioned that when they went to see him...

All of their proposals say "Gaddafi in charge."

15. The TNC referred to this last proposal in their briefing, they knew it was the same thing.
"Brother leader" Gaddafi wasn't really going to have to face a charge by the AU to step down and out.

12. Qaddafi Agrees to Accept Cease-Fire Plan, Starts Talks
Source: Bloomberg

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi agreed to accept a peace plan that called for a cease-fire with rebels, the African Union said in statement.

Qaddafi agreed to “the immediate cessation of all hostilities,” and to negotiations “with the view to adopting and implementing the political reforms necessary for the elimination of the causes of the current crisis,” according to the statement. There was no mention of Qaddafi agreeing to step down and rebels have rejected any deal that would keep him in power.

South African President Jacob Zuma yesterday presented Qaddafi with the plan, which also calls for cooperation in delivering humanitarian aid and protecting foreign nationals in Libya. The AU delegation will meet today with rebel leaders in Benghazi, their stronghold in the east.
