Mitt Romney to birthers: Barack Obama was born here. Period.

Source: Politico

Mitt Romney forcefully said Tuesday night that he believes President Barack Obama was born in America and that “the citizenship test has been passed.”

"I think the citizenship test has been passed. I believe the president was born in the United States. There are real reasons to get this guy out of office," Romney told CNBC's Larry Kudlow the day after he formally announced that he’s exploring a run for the White House. "The man needs to be taken out of office but his citizenship isn't the reason why."

Kudlow asked Romney about the issue because Donald Trump — the billionaire real estate mogul — has been all over TV questioning whether Obama was really born in in the United States and is therefore constitutionally allowed to hold the nation’s highest office. Trump's claims have driven the "birther" issue back into the national spotlight — and a recent Fox News poll found that 24 percent of voters believe Obama wasn't born in the United States, while 10 percent aren't sure.

2. Any country that seriously considers Donald Trump
for anything other than reality TV and tabloid fodder, deserves what they get. The man is slime and the very fact that his latest publicity stunt is getting any air time at all, makes me lose hope for this country.

Worse, that people actually believe anything he says, in many ways explains why this country is in such decline. He is the worst of America, smarmy, sleazy, crude, ostentatious and not even that good a businessman. How many times was he bailed out? Not to mention his daddy was rich.

But this country voted for Ronald Reagan so nothing would surprise me.

4. And we voted for Shrub
...Twice.

And 47% of voters cast their ballot for McCain despite him demonstrating how craven and power hungry he truly was by nominating Sarah Palin.

So here is us on the raggedy edge...maybe not raising the debt ceiling will be the final push.

15. If it came to having to vote for Trump
over Palin though I would vote for Trump still, thankfully though there is a better choice than either of them.

Thus far I haven't found anything.

In any event, it's a sad state of affairs when failure to pander to the crazy as a shithouse rat element in the American populace qualifies as political courage.

20. I'm not persuaded he can win them over....
...and on top of that I don't think he'd come out of primary season with the nomination. In fact I think he'd drop out fairly early, simply because the base and the tea party will push for someone further to the right.

And it's nothing personal, but I don't think Romney has the likability element a candidate needs to sell himself to the general population.

7. I hope he loses the primary--or, even better, that he wins and a birther runs as an independent.
Whatever leaves the Republican Party weakest. :)

9. Birthers can vote for Trump running as an Indy. Non-Birther-GOP can vote Romney, splitting the vote
Edited on Tue Apr-12-11 08:57 PM by Tx4obama

24. the problem with that...
seems to be that all the sane people who would have voted for him, have all been run out of the party.
not a bad strategy overall, but his timing kinda sucks the big one.
oh well, too bad for him.

What if Romney won and turned out to be the GOP's Obama. Folding and agreeing with us more than them.

Just thinking out loud.

14. Romney decides to skip the primaries and run straight for the general election.
This type of strategy used to work in the GOP, which annoints its nominees. Not sure it will with the Tea Baggers in charge.

17. By stating the obvious, union basher Romney gets to sound like a moderate
One minute Romney is donating to Governor Walker's crusade to kill public employee unions, the next he states the obvious, and he sounds semi-reasonable. Amazing.

18. And the real reason is...
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 02:59 AM by cui bono
Obama's embarrassing the Republicans by enacting Republican policies and furthering Bush's illegal wire-tapping and power grabs while starry eyed Dems cheer him on. The Republicans could never have done that.

19. He just forfeited the nomination
The primary voters are especially right wing crazy and they breathe this birther nonsense like air. He's trying to attract independents by appearing more moderate but that's what's going to kill him in the early primaries.
