Walker signs bill rolling back auto insurance minimums
Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Mandated increases in auto insurance coverage will be rolled back under legislation signed by Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday.

The measure rolls back coverage minimums passed by the Democrat-controlled Legislature in 2009 but would still require motorists to have coverage.

... Supporters of the higher coverage amounts say the lower minimums were outdated and overdue for an increase because they were set in the 1980s. Since then, health care costs for accident victims have skyrocketed, they say.

... "This is really a sad day for automobile insurance consumers," said Mike End, president of the Wisconsin Association for Justice, which represents trial attorneys. "The new law rolls back important consumer protections that were enacted in 2009."

2. Of course he did.
More fodder for bankruptcy filings, then having all of your possessions taken away when you can't pay out of pocket for what your insurance didn't cover.

7. I think this is a good measure for the people
I am sure the Insurance Industry will figure some way to make up for it but for the moment anything that hits at the Insurance Industry is a good thing. They are leeches on society. It is absolutely amazing a Republican would do such a thing..

9. Unless you are a person unfortunate enough to be hit by an under-insured driver.
Not so good for you.

11. It doesn't say a person doesn't have to have insurance, only that
they don't have to pay a high "minimum". They still must maintain insurance by Law.

12. Hence the "under insured" part of that statement
I Beleive the person's point was that many will pay only the smallest they can and then when they get into an accident, thier insurance won't cover the damages.

So who pays the difference?

15. Uninsured motorist coverage.
I carry it on my policy, because it's only a few dollars extra per year. Covers me for an extra half million in the event that the person who hits me either doesn't have insurance or doesn't have enough to cover the damages.

If you don't have UM coverabe, then you have to go after the driver and/or the owner of the car personally in court.

8. Let the buyer beware
So in effect this means that If I am hit by a Wisconsin insured vehicle that is not either no-fault or my fault. Then my insurance for Un-insured/under-insured motorist is potentially $25,000/$50,000 more at risk.

People in Cars have a choice in how to deal with this. Although it means we have to read and understand what is in our insurance policies. Pedestrians and Bicyclists who typically wouldn't have insurance to cover against uninsured/underinsured motorists hitting them are potential losers.

10. sad that people here now would rather hand more cash over to the auto insurance mob
than lower the cost of health insurance.
