House Republicans vehemently opposing tax hikes
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Leading congressional Republicans renewed their vehement opposition to tax increases Wednesday, as President Barack Obama prepared to put forth his new prescription for slow growth and national indebtedness.

"Most people understand that Washington doesn't have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. "We can't raise taxes. ... That was settled last November during the elections."

Joining Cantor in appearing on morning network news programs, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Republican chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, also ruled out tax increases, saying the country needs tax "reform," not tax hikes.

The GOP figures made the rounds of news shows ahead of Obama's speech Wednesday afternoon outlining his latest ideas for combating mounting federal deficits and for coping with slow economic growth and lingering high unemployment.

The Republicans live in a fantasy land. The reality is that you have to stimulate demand in order for the economy to get running again and trying to keep tax rates on the rich and corporations do not solve the problem of poor economic growth.

4. There was a time when the tax table in the irs forms for filing
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 08:22 AM by shraby
didn't start until a person had "x" amount of income..can't remember the figure offhand. Now they even tax social security and unemployment benefits. BUT not GE, and other large companies..in fact they get tax breaks and usually owe nothing.
They even started making people get social security numbers for their newborn babies just in case someone opened a bank account for the child and it earned (God forbid!) interest that needed to be taxed and wasn't.

2. I had hopes that we could make the tax code saner,
But now I'm thinking the only way we raise revenue is by letting the Bush/Obama tax cuts expire.

6. It's not a revenue problem, it's a spending problem...
Right. Sure, that's it. The problem with this logic is that even if this were true, it's too late to just spend less and assume that it would catch up with the deficit any time soon.

The fact of the matter is that these taxes are needed and the spending has to be better. Hence the reason that a portion of President Obama's new initiative also involves less spending AS WELL as taxing the wealthy.

9. Republicans are certainly politically savvy, they are getting out in front on this.
Flood the air waves with "the last election proved America doesn't want tax increases" and get everyone out on the talk shows while Democrats dither. Republicans are going to stamp their feet and Obama will say OK at least I tried...He might even throw in fifty percent decrease in medicare and Social security..It certainly would not surprise me and even if he does exactly that there are going to be those here that say "do you want Palin as President?" My vote is now reserved for someone with even a semblance of my ideals..Obama does not share any of them I'm afraid.

12. I ended up turning the tv off this morning
Every channel I turned while getting ready for work brought forth the face of a republican, whining. It made me sick.

I mean, comon. At least let the democrats have equal time. WTF. I used to enjoy the Today Show but I can hardly stomach it anymore. Between Blachman and Rump and Giddyup Cantor it just starts my day off on a bad note.

pffffttttt

16. 60 - 80% of Americans support this (depending on what poll you look at)
The Rethugs are on the wrong side of this by a long shot.
