BRICS nations oppose use of force in Libya

SANYA, China — Leaders of five of the world's major emerging powers said Thursday the use of force in Libya and the Arab world should be avoided, at a summit intended to showcase their growing global clout.

The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa also warned in a joint statement that volatile commodity prices could slow the global economic recovery and that huge capital flows could hurt the developing world.

Chinese President Hu Jintao chaired the wide-ranging morning talks in the southern China resort city Sanya with South Africa's Jacob Zuma, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff, Russia's Dmitry Medvedev, and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The leaders were seeking to present a united front as they push for their countries to have a bigger say on the world stage, particularly within the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and other global institutions.

Leaders of five of the world’s big emerging powers have urged an end to the fighting in Libya and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The bloc known as BRICS, standing for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has been meeting on the southern Chinese island of Hainan.

Even though South Africa voted for the UN Security Council resolution authorising air strikes in Libya, the BRICS group condemned the use of force. It did not, however, single out the NATO-led campaign for criticism.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said recent turmoil in Western Asia and North Africa “indicates there is still a long way to go before we can realise lasting peace and common prosperity in the world.”

In a dig at the dollar, the nations called for a more broad-based international reserve currency system. The BRICS aim to forge a common emerging-market negotiating stance on a wide range of issues, providing a counterweight to the West.

And South Africa voted for it? These guys are FUNNY. Glad to see South Africa has joined the emerging nations. China is a house of glass cards. Russia...let's see what happens to the wheat this summer. India...I hear they're building walls to keep out the desperate Bangladeshi when the water starts rising. Brazil seems good to go.
