Suicides rise and fall with economy: CDC report
Source: Reuters

Suicides in the United States ebb and flow with the economy, rising in bad times and falling in good, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

Their study, published online in the American Journal of Public Health, is the first to look at suicide trends by age and business cycles, and it found that working Americans -- people aged 25 to 64 -- are significantly more prone to suicide in tough economic times.

Researchers looked at the impact of business cycles on U.S. suicide rates from 1928 through 2007. They found a general correlation among suicide rates and major shifts in the U.S. economy.

For example, suicides famously spiked during the Great Depression, surging to a record high of 22 suicides per 100,000 people in 1932, up from 18 per 100,000 in 1928.

1. When we hear of a suicide we ask, horrified, 'what happened???'. If the answer
is 'money problems' we go, 'ah, I see'. Like that's ACCEPTABLE! Like it's UNDERSTANDABLE! What kind of a country/world is it that people are so broken because of their financial situation that makes a person feel death is preferable to continued existence? We value money over life. It disgusts and shames me.

3. A nation that still provides no health care for its citizens...
that blames those thrown out of jobs during economic downturns--then allows for age discrimination to preclude their getting a new job-- or even for business to discriminate additionally because they ARE unemployed. A nation that seemingly values only the rich, the exceedingly young & beautiful, or momentarily, the grotesquely weird. A nation that devalues our aged precisely for the experience and wisdom they bring.

sigh.....

2. Really? They needed to do a study to know this?
JFC what we won't waste good money on.

Especially since it won't make any difference. "Oh, if we let the eoconmy go bad, people will die!" "Eh, yeah, so?"

4. CDC tracks statistics. This is an ongoing trend that they are reporting
on. No, it is not a "costly special study" but rather the routine ongoing systematic release of summary vital statistics data... You are off base.

6. Frankly, if even $100 was spent putting this together, it was a waste, imho
Why spend ANY tax dollars on something that 1) is as obvious as can possibly be and 2) nothing will be done about?

Why? Just because we like to state the obvious?

7. We collect vital health statistics... do you also argue we should
Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 02:23 PM by hlthe2b
not track trends in life expectancy, maternal and infant mortality, gender, race and ethnicity-linked trends in preventable mortality?
National Center for Health Statistics is one of CDC's oldest "centers"... Its collection, analysis and publication of ongoing trends in health are vital to our improving access to health care and health outcomes.

Why not read up and not spout this kind of crap that belongs firmly on teabagger/RW forums. :eyes:

8. Please refrain from comparing my opinion to RW/teabagger
One has absolutely nothing to do with another. Has it devolved to where this is the ultimate insult, regardless of whether it might be true or not? WTF does this have to do with political orientation?

Right there in your quote it says the mssion is to "...identify and address critical health problems."

The "identify" part I get, but with funds for research being SO FUCKING SHORT right now, identifying the painfully obvious seems frivilous to me. Especially when there is absolutely NO concern or attempt to "address the problem."

Get a grip.

those on the right. I merely point that out. Get a grip.I did not say you were a RWer or teabagger.

However, your kneejerk reponse to public health funding is what will lead to further declines in health advances. No data, no way to advocate for changes in policies. No means to advocate for better access to health care--which simply escalates this vicious cycle. Hardly a progressive viewpoint, no matter your protestations. Inform yourself, please.

10. well, duh!!!! Is it because I am getting old that
I am able to see this and other people don't????????? During recessions you have more suicides, more violence, more thefts, more scams that con people out of money. After wars, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, you have a recession that lead to more suicides, more violence, more theft, etc. This all was foreseen by me back in 2000, why didn't anybody listen to me??????
