Senate rejects measure to defund Planned Parenthood

Carrie Dann writes:As expected, the Senate has voted down a measure to defund Planned Parenthood, with five Republicans voting with Democrats to keep the funding in place.

The vote was 42-58.

Republicans voting against the stand-alone resolution to defund Planned Parenthood were: Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine.

The same resolution passed the House earlier today by a vote of 241 to 185. Seven House Republicans voted to keep the Planned Parenthood funding, while 10 Democrats voted to eliminate it.
The budget agreement completed last Friday included a deal to eliminate a “rider” attached to the must-pass funding bill that would have cut “Title X” funding for women’s health organizations that also conduct abortions.

It would certainly be accurate to describe it as such.

Earmarks benefit a state or a district. PP funding benefits everyone. And it is money clearly spent in the public interest. Every one of those dollars spent saves us countless more because of better public health.

What I wonder is that it is usually accepted that many people want to give the answer they think a pollster wants to here - which is why most companies try to calibrate market research results by past experience of that bias. Brown has gotten puffy star treatment - especially by the more liberal Boston Globe. At this point his favorable number is around 53. What I wonder is how solid is it?

Once the Democrats converge around a candidate, you wonder if votes like the EPA ones and the mere fact that he will vote for McConnell for majority leader might pull him down. The best thing that national Democrats could do to help is what Obama just started - the defining question of 2012 may be the Obama budget vs the Ryan budget. In 1996, Weld has favorables in the 70s and was his record was more liberal than Brown's, but Kerry won by 7 points. (I admire Kerry immensely and he is a fantastic debater, but part of the reason he survived was that he made the issue Democratic values vs Republican ones. I suspect the same phenomena will help any good Democratic nominee.

The guy voted to keep the Financial reform bill from coming to vote...then voted for the bill. The press notes his vote for it but ignores that fact it never would have been votable if Brown had his way.

I trust the democrats of Massachusetts, but I wonder who is going step up to the plate and knock this guy out.

He demanded that the fund set up to bail out financial institutions if there was a failure in spite of the new regulations be paid for by returned TARP money (ie taxpayer money) instead of from a tax on the financial institutions. So, if a future bailout is needed, it is already prepaid by the taxpayer. This was an awful change, but without it we did not have the votes.

I don't live in MA, but have seen the free ride they gave him.

(One glaring case was that the Boston Globe interviewed him after he had been in the Senate for a few months. The transcript, which is online, but never in the print copy, showed a man clearly over his head. There are extensive comments on earmarks - which he was completely against - instead, he was for working with appropriations to fund specific programs he thought good! His comments on the Senate sound like something written by a kid away at school. It is embarrassing. The paper though covered for him. The viseo cherry picks a few sane comments and bridges the video with pictures of Brown. The article, which could have already been written before he spoke to them, was that he was a star from day one. 17. Intersting...the initial reports that I've read had it wrong.

5 Republicans turned. 3 out of 4 Republican women senators voted "nay", all 12 of the Democratic Party's women senators voted "nay".

This is one of the reasons that we need to get more women into Congressional seats.
