Delaware adopts civil unions bill
Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 07:30 PM by Ian David
Source: Delaware Online

DOVER – Delaware’s House of Representatives voted 26-15 this evening to grant legal status to same-sex civil unions, giving those couples the same rights, protections and obligations now granted to married couples.

<snip>

With passage of the bill – S.B. 30 – Delaware becomes the eighth state to grant such legal status to same-sex couples.

The bill is written to parallel Delaware’s marriage code, but opponents say it will certainly be used to fight for same-sex marriage.

<snip>

Gov. Jack Markell, who has championed gay rights throughout his public service career, celebrated passage and said he will sign the bill as soon as a suitable time and place is arranged.

You have to go to the GA webpage, then hit the Live Audio Link for the House Debate in the middle of the page. You need Quicktime to hear this.

UPDATE The House just passed the bill with no amendments 26 to 15. Congratulations to all who worked so hard.

tollbooths, airport runway extending into Md., etc.

Let's all raise a tasty glass of Dogfish to the First State! :beer:

4. Good for them...
It's embarrassing that here in neighboring and supposedly more liberal Maryland it was shot down.

7. Civil unions would pass in Maryland, but EQMD pushed for full marriage.
Probably correctly; they just fell a handful of votes short in the House.
