Unexpected arrest in phone-hacking case leaves (Rupert Murdoch's) News of the World stunned
Source: Guardian UK

Weatherup's arrest stunned those at the highest level of the paper. News International executives have been saying privately that they were confident Edmondson and Thurlbeck were the only staffers still working at the paper who were likely to be implicated in hacking. The Met was so determined to conceal the new direction of its investigation that Weatherup, 55, was not given notice that he was being investigated by police officers.

Unlike his colleague and former colleague Thurlbeck and Edmondson – who were arrested last week on suspicion of unlawfully intercepting mobile phone voicemail messages – he was not given the chance to voluntarily attend a police station before being placed under arrest.
snip
There are 8,000 emails relating to Sienna Miller alone. An examination of their contents could reveal that many more public figures were targeted by the newspaper, in addition to the 24 who are already bringing legal actions, including football agent Sky Andrew and the former culture secretary Tessa Jowell

And here Murdoch thought his $20,000,000 pot would buy off everybody involved. Think again Mr. Murdoch.

2. I think the Brits are getting ready to close News of the World and kick Murdock out of the country.
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 03:06 AM by Monk06
Stealing Eugenie's emails and hacking her VMs was the last straw.
Charles' tampon moment was let go because he is not well liked by
the Brits. Eugenie is another matter.

I give it months before Murdock sells News of the World to a
Brit buyer and leaves the country with his tail between his legs.

My dearest hope is that he is kept out of Canada.

may be right maybe the Brits are so low brow and masochistic
that they will let Corporate spying become the norm. If so
they deserve what they get.

54. actually, Murdock is Pre-Bush.. No we have both Reagan and Clinton to thank
The repeal of the fairness doctrine under Raygun, and then Clinton clinched it for Murdock in 1996 i think was the year. Handed the US media control of the market to him on a silver platter. And what Clinton get in return for this giveaway from Murdock ? A Stained Blue Dress splattered on the tv 24/7 for the next how many years of his administration.

5. Phone hacking: senior News of the World journalist arrested
Source: The Guardian

The police investigation into phone hacking at the News of the World has taken a dramatic turn with the surprise arrest of James Weatherup, a senior journalist at the paper.

He is the third current or former News of the World journalist to be arrested as part of Scotland Yard's new investigation into alleged phone hacking at the paper.
...
There are also expected to be further searches of the News of the World offices in Wapping shortly. It is thought that police felt the paper had failed to be fully co-operative during searches last week and officers are now determined to be more robust.

Weatherup was news editor at the News of the World for about 18 months from 2004, and was one of the inner circle of executives under the then editor, Andy Coulson, who became David Cameron's director of communications until earlier this year.

Third British Journalist Arrested in Hacking Case
By RAVI SOMAIYA and J. DAVID GOODMAN
Published: April 14, 2011

LONDON — Police officials said Thursday that they had arrested a third journalist in connection with an expanding case of phone-hacking by reporters at The News of the World, a British tabloid.

The Metropolitan Police issued a statement announcing the arrest of a man early Thursday morning “on suspicion of unlawfully intercepting mobile phone voice-mail messages,” but did not identify the suspect, who remained in custody for questioning.

A person with knowledge of the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the delicate nature of the investigation, said the suspect was James Weatherup, an assistant editor at The News of the World who has also worked as a reporter and news editor there. British news media also identified Mr. Weatherup as the suspect.

~snip~
The case has major political repercussions. Critics have said that the original police inquiry, which continued for five years without any arrests other than those of Mr. Goodman and Mr. Mulcaire, was inhibited by concern at Scotland Yard and in the previous Labour Party government over the strong political influence wielded by the media empire controlled by Mr. Murdoch, whose News International subsidiary owns The News of the World and several other major titles.

Every time some big wig in this country breaks the law, a thousand times a day, a new "We're looking forward meme crackles forth from our non surveillance of the big wigs because we are concentrating on surveillance on the little guy.

Gotta get those maryjane smokers in prison before they infect the nation so the prison owners can bleed the country for their daily keep of as much as $600,000 per year; mostly non violent "offenders" many for crimes only the state has mandated as crimes but the general public does not; thus leading to a for profit police state.

The billions being stolen every day is a non starter for our criminal government who has taken on the role of theft enabler.

Murdoch hacking scandal set to drag into next year...

Last week News Corp deputy chief operating officer James Murdoch, the son of the company patriarch, said the company had managed to "put this problem into a box" but Judge Geoffrey Vos made clear that was not the case.

"The show ain't over. That's pretty obvious," Vos told a packed London courtroom.

Let's hope it's long drawn out and scandalous:nopity:

You KNOW that if they've done it over there, they've done it, and they're probably STILL doing it, over here. We need to demand this, for the same reason that it would compromise national security, and put our congresscritters in a position to be blackmailed.

36. Even Hugh Grant got involved in this.
His phone was hacked by News of the World reporters. When his car broke down in Kent, he took a ride from one of its reporters. The guy was kind of cavileer about hacking the phones of celebrities, which is against the law in the UK. He turned the tables on him and recorded the conversation: http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2011/04/listen-tapes-yeah-police
