Job training programs cut in budget deal
Source: The Washington Post

Facing recession-weary audiences across the country, President Obama frequently highlighted the possibilities of job training for the unemployed.

(...)

But details of the budget compromise this week between the president and congressional leaders show federal funding for job training programs has taken a significant hit — more than $870 million in all. Included are cuts to occupational training grants at community colleges, green jobs classes and a program to help low-income older people acquire work skills.

While some liberal groups decried the reductions, they noted that the budget deal essentially fended off much deeper cuts to job training programs proposed by Republicans.

Wow...so the Republicans run on promising to bring back jobs, yet won't fund job training programs? And jumped onto the social issues and non-job topics (Planned Parenthood, NPR)? This message needs to be on blast in the campaign ads.

2. I know a lot of older folks
for whom those job training programs were the difference between having an adequate apartment or living in a shelter. Just another fun choice for those whose only income is Social Security. Damn.

3. Everyone knows that the best way to bring more jobs and opportunities back...
Is to ensure that you keep the populace untrained. Everyone knows that.

Jesus. Republicans think Americans are stupid. Then, they have this notion at least slightly proven when one of them wins an election.

7. Ironically, that's not far from the truth
Since we refuse to invest in education and infrastructure, we're at a comparative disadvantage to those countries that do, which leaves us competing with the developing world for low-skill jobs. Repukes won't be happy until we've all been forced back to feudalism and serfdom.

5. I hope they are still funding the H1B visa program and other work visas.
We really don't need to train Americans to do the jobs that skilled and unskilled foreign labor can do so much more profitably.

8. In all fairness - What jobs do we train for ?
IS there a course in burger flipping ? .... Car Wash Attendant college ?

Maybe learning another language and getting your passport in order would be the most prudent option ...

9. Still no jobs bills.
Still no spending bills to get us out of this economic disaster.

Still buying into the republican framing that we need to cut costs and cut the deficit now while the economy is so bad, even while economists say that this is the worst advice.

Still promoting free trade that ships more jobs overseas.

And now cutting spending for jobs programs. :grr:

I'm getting very disgusted with our party acting so much like republicans, and giving in to republicans on really bad ideas.
