NORTH Queensland has been rocked by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, with reports from across the region of buildings "shuddering''.

The quake struck at 3.31pm, about 130km south of Townsville, 60km west of Bowen and 10km below the earth's surface.

Minutes later Christchurch - the scene of the devastating earthquake only weeks ago - was hit by a 5.3 magnitude aftershock.

Aftershock warning after quake impact

RESIDENTS of north Queensland have been warned to expect aftershocks after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook the region.

Residents said last night they "stood in shock" as they realised what was happening when the earthquake rocked towns from Cairns to Charters Towers, Mackay and even the Whitsundays.

Geoscience Australia said the Queensland quake happened about 3.30pm yesterday, 60 kilometres west of Bowen. There were reports it was felt as far away as Brisbane.

Earthquakes cut power in New Zealand, rattle windows in Australia

BRISBANE, Australia - Moderate earthquakes rattled parts of Australia and New Zealand on Saturday, including the devastated city of Christchurch where power was cut to thousands of homes, officials said.

No major damage was reported from either quake, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The magnitude-5.2 quake that struck Christchurch was far less powerful than one that levelled office blocks and homes in the New Zealand city on Feb. 22, killing at least 169 people and devastating the downtown area.

Energy supplier Orion said Saturday's quake cut power to about 20,000 homes and businesses in the city, but officials were working quickly to restore service. No other damage was reported.
