Arizona gov. vetoes presidential 'birther' bil

PHOENIX – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill to require President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove their U.S. citizenship before their names can appear on the state's ballot.

The bill vetoed by Brewer on Monday would have made Arizona the first state to pass such a requirement. The Arizona bill included proof-of-qualification for all candidates appearing on Arizona ballots, with those varying by the office sought.

Brewer said in her veto letter that she was troubled that the bill empowered Arizona's secretary of state to judge the qualifications of all candidates when they file to run for office. "I do not support designating one person as the gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions," said Brewer, who was secretary of state until she became governor in 2009.

"In addition, I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on Earth to submit their 'early baptismal circumcision certificates' among other records to the Arizona secretary of state," she said. "This is a bridge too far."

17. Well yea that was some stupid shit
Prez O has a ceritifcate of live birth which is consistent with ceriticates being authorized by the State of Hawaii at the time of his birth. This acidnine bill dismisses this cerificate but oks circumcision cerificates? What Az tried to do was disregard a America State of Hawaii. Simple as that.

8. Of course there would be the expense of having
to defend stupidity in various courts for the next year +.
There is the problem that, so far, no one denyies that Obama's mother was American, and that's all it takes for him to be a citizen.
So that part of the purpose of the law is moot and is already lost.

It is unlikely that even the Scalia court, oops, Roberts court would allow state law to trump the Constitution, at least as regards a national election.

And the Supremes would look very low IQ if they pretended they didn't know that the certificate issue by the states certifying birth, date and name is not legally recognized, despite what Mr. bankruptcy Trump says. Because it would mean they couldn't prove they were citizens either.

Guess Arizona doesn't have a pocket veto, 'cause she will pay a price for being sensible.

12. Didn't Scalia review one of the birther suits and throw it out?
I thought I read something about that back in the beginning when those crazies were first going around making waves. I always figured if the Supreme Court didn't want anything to do with it, it was pretty much dead in the water.
