Mediterranean fish threatened with extinction

More than 40 species of fish native to the Mediterranean are being threatened with extinction due to overfishing and illegal nets, a report has warned.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a Geneva-based environmental network, said species prized by chefs such as bluefin tuna, seabass, dusky grouper and hake, are now endangered.

The report, released on Tuesday, said 43 species found in waters between southern Europe and northern Africa could disappear in the next few years unless governments acted to enforce regulations, reduce fishing quotas and create marine reserves.

It said bluefin tuna had seen around a 50 per cent drop in reproduction capacity over the past 40 years, and that many national and European Union quotas for the fish were being ignored.

3. These species have been endangered for years. They're just getting around to

making it official.

The international fishing fleets operate with impunity in many areas, bribing officials, and dodging the few enforcement officials who are trying to slow down the extinction of these fish.

Too many humans with too much technology.

Very sad and scary.

9. Oh the researchers have been making it official for a long time now.

In their official recomendations to the committees which set the quotas.

And every year the committees ignored those reccomendations and following the politically expedient path, went with the ones requested by the fishing industry.

And then the proper authorities refused to even enforce those limits properly.

Looks a bit like a reprisal of the Oil industry, Coal, etc.

10. Yes, BUSINESS AS USUAL. Here in North Carolina, our fisheries biologists and state

fisheries managers have sent recommendation after recommendation to put quotas or 'no catch' orders on various fish species, but they are always overruled by the politically-appointed members of the Commission because those members are mostly affiliated with or directly tied to the commercial fishing interests who want NO REGULATION of our fisheries.

Same old, same old.
