‘Don’t Tread on Me’ gets official seal of approval in Mo., Ariz.
Source: Tucson Citizen/USA Today

Following the state House, the Missouri Senate today voted overwhelmingly to allow motorists to buy special license plates bearing “Don’t Tread on Me,” a Revolutionary War slogan adopted by Tea Party supporters, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The Show Me State action comes a day after Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer enacted a law that grants the so-called Gadsden flag equal status to the American flag and forbids homeowner associations from prohibiting the distinctive yellow banner with a coiled rattlesnake, says the Arizona Daily Star.

Other protected flags in Arizona include the state flag, those of any branch of the military, the POW-MIA flag and the flag of any Indian nation.

The Missouri Senate voted overwhelmingly today to direct the state Department of Revenue to begin allowing motorist to purchase special license plates featuring the phrase "Don't Tread on Me."

The expression originally appeared on some early flags of the United States. But since 2009 it has been closely associated with the tea party movement. It was this meaning that caused state Sen. Tim Green, D-Spanish Lake, to vote against the measure, which passed on a 31-1 vote.

"The words 'Don't Tread on Me' bring with them a connotation of confrontation," Green said, adding that while he was voting against the measure he still hoped it passed due to the other special license plates it authorized, including one honoring those who received the military's Combat Action Badge. "But I just can't vote in favor because of the bad connotation with that phrase."

At least it will be easy to identify them!

5. Very progressive of them
not to also include the Confederate flag along with it.

Some day we'll have more license plate designs than cars.

6. I picked that username here on DU BEFORE the Tea Party existed
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 07:02 PM by DontTreadOnMe
I wish there was a way to change my username here on DU.

People often accuse me as "pro" Tea Party here... so I changed my icon to Hendrix... and then they think twice.

7. I understand...
I've been flying the first navy ensign for years (the 13 red and white stripes with the snake and 'don't tread on me') in protest of all the things the tea party stands for. Now it looks like I'm with them.
Oh well, if one of them asks, I'll tell them exactly that, I fly it because I'm against letting the poor starve and die w/o healthcare, wars of empire, and corporate control of the nation.

18. Keep it
I love that flag and it pisses me off to no end that they are using it. If I still drove I would have that plate and cover my car in liberal stickers.

19. You could try mailing the admins. Given the circumstances,
changing from that name at this point is not that unreasonable of a request.

However, it does make for a good conversation starter.

25. Don't let them take it from you
I always liked the Don't Tread on Me flag, and I HATE that it's been co-opted by the teabaggers. I don't think we should surrender it to them the way we surrendered the word "liberal" as a bad word.

It is, after all, everything that represents our great country:

No, not really.

I mean, the GOP has actually bought into their own lies and propaganda that they are a majority.

There are probably more blind transgender albino hippies than there are Teabaggers in this country.

But don't tell the Media or the GOP.

14. Well to be honest...
Even though the Tea baggers hijacked this quote, it is a part of our history as is the flag with the snake on it. However, when ever I see it, I tend to cringe, because I know what it represents in present day usage.

15. I did a little research on this...
it costs the organization $5,000 to have the plates available for issue, and then each person who wants one has to pay an extra $15.

But they don't want to pay taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!

20. Ahem. AND the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
I really lose my temper when the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not brought into these discussions, as if MY imaginary magical sky pixie is somehow less valid than all those others, even though it created itself on the same foundation of logic and critical thought on which all other religions rely.

21. Does the Tea Party get any money from this?
Since you have to pay some extra for a specialty plate, I'm curious if the Tea Party gets some of that.

I may be completely wrong about this, but don't some of the fees for specialty plates go to the organization depicted on the plate?

We ought to have DU plates that you can get through donations. :)

27. It's all good. More revenue. ID the idiots on the road...
Hell, I'd get that plate and put my Obama 2012 sticker right next to it, if I were willing to pay all that extra money for a special plate. (Here in MO you have to pay for the plate and then you keep paying extra on a yearly basis.)
