Colombia says Chavez helpful against FARC
Fecha: 19/04/2011

Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos said left-wing FARC guerrillas are probably operating in neighboring Venezuela but that leftist President Hugo Chavez was helping to battle them.

"It is likely that the guerrillas are also present in Venezuela, but I am confident that they are not under the protection of the Venezuelan government," he told Radio Caracol on Monday.

"President Chavez has said: 'If you find a FARC camp in Venezuela, give me the coordinates and we will respond immediately.' When we have given him the information, he has responded," he said.

The presence of FARC militants in Venezuela had been a recurrent source of discord between the two countries under Santos's predecessor, Alvaro Uribe.

2. Seems like Santos and Chavez had an agreement.
Santos gets to say that FARC is in Venezuela, Chavez gets to be seen as going after them. Win win for both sides over this long standing dispute.

4. It benefits Chavez the most, so it's probably the recognition of Lobo.
The real question is what Santos gets for recognizing Lobo. The US probably pushed for that.

The earlier reports that Santos said Venezuela isn't harboring FARC were of course wrong and Santos had to clarify.

5. Apparently democracy doesn't need to be restored for a military dictatorship
to legitimize itself... you just need a little time for it to disappear from the news.

Why is Lobo any more legitimate today than when he was installed by a military coup government with a whitewash election?
