Toyota recalls 2007-08 RAV4s, 2008 Highlanders for air bag defect

Toyota today announced a recall of 308,000 RAV4 compact SUVs and Highlander mid-size SUVs to replace the side curtain airbag sensor assemby.

The recall involves 214,000 2007-08 RAV4s and 94,000 2008 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models.

Toyota says the defect involves the two roll angle sensors in the rollover sensing curtain airbag system. If one malfunctions, a warning light goes on and the system will not activate (though still would go off in a side impact), Toyota says.

But if both sensors fail at about the same time after the vehicle's initial air bag check, Toyota says the seat belt pretensioner and the curtain shield airbag could inadvertently go off.
