Utah church offers free Korans in Easter gesture
Source: Reuters

A Utah church is giving away free copies of the Koran in an Easter season ecumenical riposte to the recent burning of the Islamic holy book by a controversial Florida pastor.

The Wasatch Presbyterian Church has ordered 50 copies of the Koran to be distributed at a local bookstore starting on Monday.

"We're not promoting Islam, we're not saying the Koran is the Bible," said Scott Dalgarno, the church's pastor. "We're just saying that if people are curious, if they want their consciences informed on this issue ... then let them pick up a copy on us and read it and decide for themselves what to think."

Dalgarno says each Koran, which the world's nearly 1.6 billion Muslims believe is God's final testament, will have a bookmark insert that reads: "This book was donated by the leaders of Wasatch Presbyterian Church who are not afraid of truth wherever it can be found."

1. Wish more folks were open about things like that.
understanding is the key here, even when it comes to religious writing. How can anyone condemn something they haven't read.

3. Kicked and recommended for an enlightened church; that has the courage of it's convictions, that's
what true faith is about.

Thanks for the thread, Viva_La_Revolution

4. I found a free Koran on my porch
Someone was distributing them, in weatherproof plastic shopping bags. It sits on the same shelf as my bible, and gets read about the same amount.

I can't throw them out, not because I'm afraid of the lightning striking me, but just not taking any chance that my atheistic bent could be wrong.

:hi:

11. I am reminded of an old joke:
A minister noticed all through his sermon that a little old lady in the back bowed her head each time he mentioend Jesus Christ, but she also bowed her head each time he mentioned Satan.

After the service, he approached her to ask, "Why do you bow your head every time you hear Satan's name?"

She responded, "Well, Reverend, you never can never be sure what will happen after you die, and it doesn't hurt to be polite."

29. "By this all men will know that you are My disciples...
... if you have love for one another." (John 13:35)

It's not the politics and the rhetoric, nor any soundness of theology. It's the Love that matters.

Now, watch the backlash from the teapers.

Stand strong, Wasatch Church. You've captured the true spirit of humanity.

25. +1.And I'd love to see an overview of all major religions taught in High Schools
I think that demonizing and misrepresenting other beliefs is one of the primary causes of conflicts, well, everywhere.

22. I love the Presbyterians. When I was a kid we went from church on a special
outing. Turned out it was a synagogue. I was impressed with religion on that day.

23. I grew up in a Presbyterian church and we went to a
synagogue, too. When I was 15, we moved and my parents joined some crazy Assembly of God church. I never liked it, never believed what they taught, and stopped going altogether. Reading this, I'm thinking that maybe after all these years, I could actually attend a Presbyterian church again and not hate it or think the people there were absolute hypocrites.
