In Hawaii, accessing some Obama birth info is easy
By MARK NIESSE, The Associated Press
Posted April 23, 2011, at 1:27 p.m.

HONOLULU — Lost in the renewed scrutiny into President Barack Obama’s birth records is the fact that anyone can walk into a Hawaii vital records office, wait in line behind couples getting marriage licenses and open a baby-blue government binder containing basic information about his birth.

Highlighted in yellow on page 1,218 of the thick binder is the computer-generated listing for a boy named Barack Hussein Obama II born in Hawaii, surrounded by the alphabetized last names of all other children born in-state between 1960 and 1964. This is the only government birth information, called “index data,” available to the public.

So far this month, only The Associated Press and one other person had looked at the binder, according to a sign-in sheet viewed Wednesday in the state Department of Health building. The sheet showed about 25 names of people who have seen the document since March 2010, when the sign-in sheet begins.

Those documents complement newspaper birth announcements published soon after Obama’s Aug. 4, 1961 birth and a “certification of live birth” released by the Obama campaign three years ago, the only type of birth certificate the state issues.

1. I thought The Donald had people in Hawaii looking into Obama's birth
and they were finding amazing things. Yeah, like maybe he really was born there.

They're kicking back in a Honolulu hotel suite watching Hawaii Five-O, Magnum PI and Hawaiian Eye episodes on DVDs!

2. "renewed scrutiny?"
Lost in the renewed scrutiny into President Barack Obama’s birth records is the fact that anyone can walk into a Hawaii vital records office, wait in line behind couples getting marriage licenses and open a baby-blue government binder containing basic information about his birth.

It's not "renewed scrutiny." It's the "press" chasing any freak show it can to get a couple of extra readers to sell to the advertisers in its race to the bottom. This week's freak show was Trump.

4. Why is the media going along with this? Does anyone for a moment think...
that all of Obama's primary & GE challengers didn't check this out? I mean, WTF? In the end, I think Obama will benefit from this lunacy.

8. Yes, it does benefit him
Only people that believe this crap are those that would never vote Obama in the first place.

And as one of my Republican (non-birther) friends noted - that if there was anything to this, Obama ran against two of the most aggressive, no-holds barred campaigns out there (Clinton and McCain), surely one of them would have mentioned it...

9. Precisely. I'm guessing, the thinking behind this strategy is to plant the seeds...
of doubt as it just perpetuates the notion that Obama is "the other", or that he's "exotic". I think Trump will eventually try to bury this hysteria, but I'm hoping the media will be just as tough on him then, as they are being overbearingly gracious to him now.

17. I think McCain would have used it in a heartbeat . . .
if he hadn't been born in Panama. The "natural born" concept might have been too confusing for his low IQ base to grasp. He didn't want to open that can of worms.

I don't think Hillary would have used this issue because she didn't think her potential voters were that stupid and no right winger was going to vote for her anyway.

11. I'm gonna play devil's advocate for a minute -
I have a habit, good or bad, of putting myself in other people's shoes, and I've done some time for it, but reading this OP I began to wonder how a birther might react.

And I gotta say, it does seem strange to hear that a document in question is not releasable because, it just is not releasable. Why would there be such a clamp on that kind of document? Not even the president can see it other than in person? Wow, those are some well-protected documents. I'm thinking Obama could request the release and it would happen. Why doesn't he just do that? Just photograph it and put it up on the web. Why not?

Oh, we've got 25 people that have verified the document as authentic, or at least appearing to be. Come on, would 25 people lie to you? "No, you can't look, but we'll tell ya what we saw."

You know, that just feeds their fire.

12. Maybe more will be revealed .
Obama will probably have the last laugh when he provides irrefutable proof that he was born in the US. Meanwhile a lot of effort and energy is being expended by birthers who if they didn't have this to focus on would come up with some other insane conspiracy theory. Their efforts to date will make them look like even bigger fools down the road than they are now.

13. There is no such things a irrefutable proof to conspiracy theorists--
Edited on Sun Apr-24-11 01:25 AM by Moonwalk
--if there was, then people still wouldn't still be arguing over who really shot JFK or be looking for Aliens hidden in Area 51 or proof that we didn't really land on the moon, it was all a hoax done on a sound stage. Trust me, if someone found a long lost film taken by one of the nurses at Obama's birth, showing his mother giving birth to him, showing Hawaii hula dancers and surfers outside the window, as well as American flags and a the doctor reading a newspaper with the correct date and news on it for that date between labor pangs, the Birthers would insist the film was faked and proved nothing.

Such theorists are like cultists defending their religion; they only believe "proof" that supports their claims--no matter how weak or ridiculous. The other side can have the strongest possible proof and the theorists will still find a way to argue that it's not good enough. Like that absurd assertion over the non-raised seal on the birth certificate that's been photographed and shown around. They've been presented with irrefutable proof...and they refuted it! :banghead:

There is no point in trying to convince the Birthers--in fact, it's a waste of time. I'm with others who say that the only people who need to be convinced are the media, and all they need to be convinced of is that this story is so boring and dead that viewers will change the channel rather than listen to it. If the media can be convinced of that, then that will be the end of it for all but the birthers (who will never stop believing, but what does that matter if no one is listening to them?).

16. Or to anyone whose mind is made up.
Psychologists have repeated experiments that people presented with the truth double-down on the not true. It appears to be a mechanism common to most people. It certainly explains why it's easier to get in an argument than it is to win one.

18. Satellite images actually show the landing sites and Rover tracks on the moon.
But no, even that kind of evidence is not good enough for the willfully stupid. As you've pointed out, you just cannot win with them.

14. Where did it say you can't look at the document?
I got the impression that if you were willing to go to the office where the records were kept you could personally view it, along with the other records in the volume. As their rules prohibit copying the record, a certificate of live birth is issued.

Here's the Hawaii State Department's explanation of the relative law: link

I doubt that even viewing the document in person would satisfy a true birther, however. The only proof they will accept is to have been in the delivery room when Obama was born and to have personally cut the umbilical cord.
