The Onion Fools The New York Times With Fake Obama Tiger Beat Cover
Source: Mediaite

Today The New York Times admitted they made the mistake of treating a fake creation from The Onion as something legitimate. Last week the Times printed an article documenting the history of the squeaky-clean teen magazine Tiger Beat, and included a retrospective of past magazine covers. Unfortunately (or humorously depending on one’s perspective), in the collection they also included a parody cover created by The Onion, which featured President Obama.

The correction printed today in the Times:

A series of pictures last Sunday of covers of the magazine Tiger Beat, with an article about how the original teen-girl tabloid has remained virtually unchanged since its inception in 1965, erroneously included a parody cover, produced by the satiric newspaper The Onion, that featured a picture of President Obama.

5. The New York Times has been a joke for at least a decade.
The only newspaper I'd put any stake in is The Guardian, but even then, not much. Newspapers are over, and they've done it to themselves.

Poll: Happy, Healthy Obamas Out Of Touch With Miserable Americans
Panelists discuss whether Obama's openly loving family is a slap in the face to the average American who only bears feelings of resentment towards relatives.

22. Hilarious.
Indeed.

I wish I could find the graphic on line from their book "Our Dumb World" that shows the progression of plate tectonics.

1st there's an image of Pangaea, then an image of Laurasia and Gondwana (the 2 big continents Pangaea broke into), Then an image of the continents today with North America in the middle...

Last a future view with the USA alone in a vast sea... as every other continent moves as far away as possible.

Hilarious!

25. Only the absolute stupidest of us can fall for The Onion today.
I seriously wonder how somebody can miss this today. The Onion has changed to help brand itself, methinks, by making it really obvious that they are "The Onion". A while back, it was much more subtle. Today, you have to put your Stupidity Gears in overdrive to mistake it.

39. I don't know....
I get tweets from The Onion as well as Breaking News from MSNBC, CNN or BBC. I have a tendency to read the headline before glancing at the source. There have been times I would have sworn I was reading something sent by a media outlet only to find it came from the Onion. Our world is more and more bizarre each day! Now would I be fooled long enough to forward a headline or full story to someone? I think not.

16. ...and the "six or eight" Judith Miller pre-war leaked to reference on Sunday morning talk shows?
YEah we got a retraction and then nobody talked about it

The 1,000,000 dead in the Iraq War was not possible with out the New York Times

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk,

I'm a woman's man: no time to talk.

Music loud and women warm.

I've been kicked around since I was born.

And now it's all right - it's O.K. -

And you may look the other way.

We can try to understand the New York Times' effect on man.

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother,

You're stayin alive, stayin' alive.

28. Chinese media picked up an Onion story and they reported that
Congress was refusing to reconvene in DC until the House of Congress was updated with a retractable roof. They have a whole cultural thing to blame for that but the NYT ?

From The Onion story: "Don't get us wrong: We love the drafty old building," the Onion jestingly quoted House Speaker Dennis Hastert saying.

"But the hard reality is, it's no longer suitable for a world-class legislative branch. The sight lines are bad, there aren't enough concession stands or bathrooms, and the parking is miserable."

I mean, while it's funny enough when foreign legitimate publications do this, they at least have the luxury of using the excuse of being foreign. But the NEW YORK TIMES???

Today, the supermarket tabloids -- tomorrow, the teenyboppers!

P.S. Here's the original: "According to a poll released Monday by Teen Zogby!, both Barack Obama's approval and dreaminess ratings...have risen to 82 percent..."

35. That's what happens when editors, fact-checkers, and proofreaders get laid off
The rampant embarrassing inaccuracies in major newspapers of late can frankly be traced to layoffs, cutbacks, downsizing, etc.

When I worked for a free weekly newspaper in the 90s, every single piece of copy made several rounds through at least a half-dozen pairs of very intelligent eyes. I mean, I'm talking about the 60-word movie blurbs here. Cover images required sign-offs from at least two senior editors even after they'd passed the grunt gauntlet.

The fewer people you have doing the critical work, the faster copy is expected to move, the more intimidated and inexperienced (and cheaply-paid) the workers are, the more shit like this will be inevitable.

40. You better believe it.
Many members of my family used to be in the newspaper business and one still is peripherally. Newsroom layoffs have completely changed the content of local and regional dailies and weeklies. The content gaffs would be funny if they weren't based on greed.

41. Good point there! When I worked in publishing every word and sentence
was proofread, copy edited and checked for accuracy, and had to be verified by several sources. Those days are gone..leaving much up to computer programs or inexperienced "Google Searchers" for fact-checking and accuracy in content.
