Mississippi River nears highest level since '37

VICKSURG, Miss. -- The National Weather Service has forecast that the Mississippi River will crest at 52.5 feet in Vicksburg on May 13, the highest level since 1937.

"We've got water coming down on top of heavy rain," Marty Pope, senior service hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, told the Vicksburg Post.

"It's looking pretty bad right now. We have lots of rain to come, too."

The Mississippi River at Cairo, Ill., at the confluence with the Ohio River, stood at 53.5 feet overnight Sunday, 13.5 feet above flood stage, and it was predicted to crest there May 3 at 60 feet.

1. Was in Le Claire Iowa on Friday, it was out of it's banks there

Le Claire is north of Davenport where I80 crosses the river.

we have`t had the rains that have fallen south of I80. at least not yet.

11. Not quite as bad but family/friends back in Louisville sent me pics (flooding widespread)

looks almost as bad as it did in '97 when we had 14" of rain pretty much overnight.

All that water is heading downstream adding on to the rains up the Mississippi.

Trees have been reported down in Caneyville in Grayson Co., KY with these storms. The most intense damage appears to be in Murray. The KY MesoNet station recorded a wind speed of 100.8 MPH in Murray as the line approached... damage to structures, trees & power lines reported.

The popular question has been (well in addition to if areal is a real word - yes it is) has been how will this compare to 1997. The flood of 1997 was Louisville's 7th largest flood on record. We could reach into the top 10 is the rain forecasts pan out.

Officials in Vilonia, AR report that the town is gone... they are asking for help. Radar imagery showed an impressive return (reflectivity & velocity) very close to the town. A tornado emergency was issued for the town, population 3,800, before the storm hit. Daybreak will bring horrifying images from this location just northeast of Little Rock. Reports say that the pavement was even scoured... this only happens in the strongest tornadoes.

Officials in Henry County said that they are inspecting the dam at Jericho Lake carefully. There are signs of erosion. Evacuation orders were give to those that live along the flood threat area. A shelter at 4H in New Castle has been opened for those affected. A Flash Flood WARNING remains in effect for this portion of Henry County until 1am.
