'Tea party' license plate draws ire as critics emerge on left, right
Source: Arizona Central

"Don't tread on me" may soon be a slogan on a new license plate in Arizona. But critics say the proposal treads on shaky ground, getting the state involved in the "tea party," a political movement that has embraced the phrase as its own.

Even some tea partyers say the bill is the antithesis of what they're about: minimal government involvement.

-----

Last week, hours after the Legislature approved the bill, a New York congressman announced plans to discourage states from following the Arizona Legislature's lead.

The "License Plate Political Slush Fund Prevention Act" would withhold 15 percent of federal highway dollars for any state that, in the view of U.S. Rep Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y., uses government resources to administer a program that encourages partisan political organizations.

1. Just another reason for me to move back to Chicago.
This state is insane. We've also allowed teapers to wear teaper t-shirts to polling places (so far, only in one city). Already have "Choose Life" plates. Workin' on gettin' that "state gun". There's more, but I'm sick of talking about Arizona.

3. M y Aunt & Uncle moved to Arizona years ago...
from Connecticut to retire. They say the same thing about Arizona that it has become insane & a national embarrassment & they are considering moving back to the cold north.

6. I would.
Connecticut was on my top 5 states before I moved here. I should've listened to a friend of mine. I hate cold, but I can always layer. You can't hide from crazy.

14. The State Gun of Arizona should be the cattle stunner
Considering your state's political class contains John McCain, Jan Brewer and Joe Arpaio, I figure SOMEONE must be over there knocking people's brains to the side.

18. Good point.
We also have Pearce, Pierce, Kyl, Gosar (my Rep) and a plethora of other jesters and fools. It's like living at a carnival, but one of those creepy ones like on Something Wicked This Way Comes.

22. When I was seeking a new place to call home as I sought employment
I looked at everything I could find about 'livability' for cities in the US .... I asked DUers what they believed was a great place to live ...

The reports came back for Chicago .... the hands down winner by a mile ....

I have never been there .... I have only driven through Southern Illinois on my excursions across this great land ...

I wound up finding a great job in Portland Oregon, and still live in this wonderful, quirky little city ...

But it is my understanding that Chicago IS a wonderful place to live .... No matter what semi-fictionalized, overly-dramatized accounts you may have read ....

It is unfortunate that our DU friends in places like Arizona and Texas have to tolerate the rabid conservative philosophies of their local and state government, but surely they should not expect other DUers to NOT criticize those right wing nutcases simply because they may happen to live there ...

Yeah .. it sucks to live under the yoke of right wing haters .... But we all have our own crosses to bear ...

The governmental policies and personalities in Arizona are just as open to criticism as anyone in Chicago might be ...... Still, the reports are - Chicago is OUR kind of town ...

Signing off from Portland Oregon .... Whatever ....

7. That flag belongs to this whole country. I hate it when groups soil something they don't own.
That flag was against tyranny...and as Scott Walker and other Tea Party nuts make these fascist grabs at power they have shown themselves to be the opposite of what this flag represents. THEY are the tyrants in today's political system.

23. "I can see Boston harbor from my window.". Imagine how I feel about their stealing "Tea Party."
Their misappropriation of the American Revolution is really annoying, especially since conservatives sided with the Crown.

As if they don't look like fools in their three-corner hats and misspelled signs anyway.

13. I say let 'em do it.
If these stupid bastards want to pay extra money to the government for a special license plate to display how they don't like the government, that's great. I think they should also be allowed to pay a special tax to be able to include an angry letter with their income tax.

If we can sell our home here in Arizona we're moving back home to Michigan & the wackos can have this state. The only thing we'll miss is the weather & the beautiful mountain's.
