In a first, women surpass men in advanced degrees
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Census figures show women outnumber men for the first time when it comes to finishing college and holding advanced degrees.

The findings released Tuesday come amid record shares of women in the workplace and a steady decline in stay-at-home mothers.

Among adults 25 and older, 10.6 million in the U.S. who earned a master's degree or higher were women, compared to 10.5 million men. Women, however, still lag men in subcategories such as business, science and engineering.

In terms of finishing college, women surpass men in earning bachelor's degrees, by 1.5 million.

3. Not just advanced degrees, but just finishing college. How are women supposed to make the same?
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 12:30 PM by FormerDittoHead
I think the REAL news is that they're excelling in undergraduate degrees.

Putting aside the negativity I see in the msgs above, I don't see how women are supposed to make the same as men if they don't have the same education / qualifications.

I can't see this as anything but good news toward women's equality.

4. And incredibly, when I first heard this, it was from a Freeper
who blamed it on the government. I guess that the government is keeping men out of college. That women seem to be showing more motivation to go to college means nothing.

5. And yet on average, women make a quarter less than men.
Those degrees are not the ticket to better earnings as they once were.

8. it;s not the lack of education keeping women's salaries down- it;s flat out discrimination
Bosses will get away with what they can, and paying women less for the same job is woefully common. And very very hard to prove in court. The person in question needs to find out, and sue quickly. Companies get off very easily, and they know they can.

15. I think you may be wrong. If this trend holds once these ladies work their way into the job market
I expect to see large gain in pay equity, in fact we might find women getting paid more.

Unfortunately this trend is brand new so the old wage paradigm will hold until more of the older workers cycle out of the system.

16. the 70% statistic is comparing apples to apples, same job- women get lower pay
so they may start competing for better jobs, and again, be compensated less for it. just because there will be more women competing for and getting better jobs, it;s not going to change work place discrimination overnight. Their average salary will raise, yes- but only because they have worked harder to get those jobs. But it;s not as if their offer will be par with what a man is offered- that hasn;t changed much in 30 years,
Because it's very very hard to find out and prove it's happening and win a lawsuit. very difficult.

13. Wages would be what we call a lagging indicator. These women are just getting into the job market
we have to wait until the current population of workers (boomers) cycle out of the system before we would be able to see any significant change.

14. My daughter#2 has a BA degree in Hospitality Management from a "prestigious"
university. She applied to her alumni school for a publicly advertised job (and was told she was unqualified as a candidate for a position as a food court service manager at their university. That, after racking up school loans and holding PT jobs in both food and hotel services. Geesh!

She's also been told she's not an acceptable candidate for other jobs such as a front desk clerk at several major hotel chains, though if she was a single mother, she might be more favorably considered. Of course, Somolian/Mexican would be ok too. Alas, she's white and blond. Go figure! She's successfully worked in that capacity while attending school, but the uneducated mommy got the promotion. Alas, her sex life, Mom supposes, has been responsible, and there aren't any illegitimate kid(s) either.

Meanwhile, daughter #1 who works from home for a US government contract-or is taking a long-drive trip w/baby to attend a "working retreat" on the beach. Bonding "games" are big on the taxpayers' dime.

Meanwhile, spouse and I, hold up two fingers as we tread water in the unemployment line, while spouse's Stafford loans continue to be deferred /w interest. Why don't the Feds/banksters want their money back or at the very least more income to tax??? They'll be so happy to collect a pittance from a miniscule tax refund or reduce already forced early retirement benefits of SS? It's an honest question, but I truly resent being their political pawn

6. I wonder how many of these advanced degrees were secured on the
internet? I was talking to a recruiter the other day and I asked him how important was a masters degree secured on the internet. He told me the vast majority of them are round-filed. His company will look at some where the undergraduate degree was secured at a worthy university.

12. Don't understand your response. I wonder how much of the
women's degrees were from the internet. Women with advanced degrees relative to men was the subject of the header post. Internet degrees for men are just as invalid. I think women have more opportunity to obtained advanced degrees from the internet, as there are still a small proportion of non-working mothers who have time to get a degree online.

18. You mean online degrees from such hell-holes as Harvard?
http://www.extension.harvard.edu/DistanceEd/

or Stanford, another well-known diploma mill?

http://scpd.stanford.edu/onlineexperience/index.jsp

You mean THOSE worthless online degrees, do ya?

Better catch yourself up. Or maybe that Liberty University sheepskin is all right, after all.

19. I thought of that. The guy next door is a CFO for a financial company. He
is going after a Masters Degree online from a good school in the hopes that when the CEO leaves, which apparently is imminent, he will get his job. I asked him wasn't he worried that the degree would be considered second-class because it is online. He said yes, but it was all that he could do. Maybe this is acceptable now. If so, your point is valid. The companies I worked for wouldn't accept online degrees. Maybe things have changed... That in itself explains a lot more than meets the eye. Thanks for your post.
