GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations must launch an international investigation into the killing, arrest and torture of hundreds of peaceful protesters in Syria, the United States said on Wednesday.
The U.N. Human Rights Council will hold an emergency session on Syria on Friday at Washington's request and is due to consider a draft resolution submitted by the U.S. delegation.
Fifteen other countries, including Britain, France and Japan, supported the U.S. move, but a close vote was expected on the text in the 47-member forum, amid strong opposition by China, Cuba and Russia, according to Western diplomats.
Syrian troops tightened control on Wednesday over flashpoints of protest against President Bashar al-Assad, who faced growing international calls to end violence a rights group said had killed over 450 people.
