Shiloh Baptist Church receives threats after comments from Sean Hannity

By Hamil R. Harris

Shiloh Baptist Church in the District said it has received threatening phone calls and e-mails after an Easter visit from President Obama and a conservative television commentator’s subsequent playing of a videotape in which the pastor said that those espousing racial prejudice do so “under the protective cover of talk radio.”

The Rev. Wallace Charles Smith said the church has received more than 100 threats since Fox News channel’s Sean Hannity aired a tape Monday of a speech Smith gave in January 2010 at Eastern University in Saint Davids, Pa.

“We received a fax that had the image of a monkey with a target across is face,” Smith said. “My secretary has received telephone calls that have been so vulgar until she has had to hang up.”

Smith, who shared several of the e-mails with The Post, said he had not notified authorities but is consulting with church leaders about what to do.

2. I was flipping thru the channels last nite and caught the end of this conversation on Hannity.
I stopped to listen because I assumed they would be talking about the birth certificate, but no, they were going after this preacher and saying things like Obama needs to research the Churches he attends - and added "Well at least he went to Church, which he never does".

The hatred & racism was just dripping from their "fair and balanced" panel.

When he started talking about his idol, Sean Hannity, and nearly get to genuflecting, I figured the conversation was over......

92. Family members of people arrested cite the influence of Glenn Beck in CA, WA, etc.
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 11:58 AM by freshwest
The perps listened to the program constantly and were caught up in the emotional state it produces. These programs are on all the time, repeated and in many venues.

A woman in WA said she and her brother listened to Beck and began to believe all his 'death by Obama' talk. She bought emergency food supplies and felt a continual state of panic. But he focused on guns and ammunition.

They lived in a state of fear they'd be taken to FEMA camps for political reasons. She woke up but he didn't. He ended up getting arrested for constant, graphic, escalating death threats to Democratic elected officials and their families.

Between Glenn Beck and Alex Jones, some people are changing their lives to survive a dystopia that is *always* the fault of liberals, progressives and Democrats, with Death Panels and all of that.

But they just voted in their own Death Panels. Will they ever get out of this nightmare and be able to work as productive members of a democratic (little d) society again?

39. There are at least three DU threads on this already...
One about Craigslist recruiting including the ad; another about DOD workers employed to troll internet sites to drive off liberal and progressive posters from websites; and another with their instructions how to shell post websites to give the appearance of a nation approving of these GOP actions and deriding liberals, Democrats, etc. on any issue discussed. They have a method, saying their tools are to infiltrate, shame and confuse. That's in a thread here.

They are being paid, for the most part, no different than the O'Keefe types who live in luxury while doing dirty tricks for the GOP to suppress votes and smear progressives in MSM.

I've been on websites where this has been done. And they only attack Democrats, liberals and progressives, posting off topic insults to drive their news and views off the page.

They have the computing power to post faster than the host systems filter with as many screen names as a spammer. They drown boards with bigoted remarks, death threats, profanity about things most people never imagined, post pictures of all kinds of abuse before the moderators can catch them.

Eventually all the people who came to talk about the issues leave because it's so disgusting. Mission accomplished.

DU is doing a very good job pushing them out because of the high number of well-informed posters here.

30. I'm not quite sure what that means...
...but I'll assume that response was because my comment wasn't clear. And looking back, it wasn't.

I was wondering why people would so vehemently call and threaten a church. I mean really, threats to a frikkin' church? Then it occurred to me that maybe they were doing so because the reverend of that church is an African-American? I did a Google image search on the good reverend's name, and sure enough, he's an African-American. Unfortunately, my surprise at the situation disappeared, due to the blatant racism of the whole birther phenomenon.

I hope this clears up any confusion. The internet is bad at subtlety.

buying radio stations. It is the only way to combat this wave of rw cancer. You will never get clear channel, enter com, cumulus, or salem or any of these other big media companies to give progressive talk any chance. they would rather loose money on any format than to give progressive talk a chance. Come on Soros, Buffet, hollywood types with money. You want to fight back. buy a damn radio station in all the major markets so the message can be heard.

63. no need- first the left just needs to stop ignoring those radio stations
picket your local racist limbaugh stations and force your state universities to stop broadcasting sports on those limbaugh stations.

there is NO organized left wing response to RW radio, the 1000 racist radio stations that make excuses for racism every day and made all this birther shit acceptable through sheer unchallenged volume and repetition.

until the radio is challenged all other efforts are basically just catch up responses.

progressives will lose all major messaging battles until they picket the limbaugh/hannity megastations and boycott those stations' local sponsors.

when the only local RW radio station sponsors left are the ones that will scream into the phone that they agree with limbaugh and the teabaggers then most of those stations will no longer be able to pay overhead. there are many local sponsors that will look elsewhere if there is an organized effort to educate and shame them- most are there for business reasons.

79. This is THE most important post on this thread
Most people are simply bitching and moaning about the state of our discourse in regard to HAnnity. The fact is that you are 100% correct about the origin of much of this stuff - AM right-wing hate radio. This absolutely has to be fought locally against the LOCAL radio station advertisers. The national advertisers solicited by the Limbaugh show are mostly snake-oil companies that thrive on good or bad publicity. They simply don't care. It is the local Ford dealer or jeweler that advertises on the Limbuagh show or radio station that would drop their business if given sufficient opposition. Remarkably, I have heard ads on the Limbaugh show from unions and other progressive organizations that are immediately followed by direct attacks from the right wing host on their membership.

Best post of the day!
Cheers!

85. US food stamp prog ads on limbaugh! many of their sponsors are making bad business decisions
for eg, it's pretty stupid for pella, trying to sell energy efficient windows, to advertise on a network of stations dedicated to delaying action on global warming. same with any construction related biz that would benefit from energy efficiency retrofitting, or infrastructure improvement, etc.

and it can be pointed out to many universities how their sports associations with RW radio make a joke of their 'mission' statements.

76. The deep pockets have to follow the same game plan flush rush limpballs has used.
They basically gave free programming for dead air space on small market stations. I would say that Ed Schultz would be the guy to offer up a game plan. Someone needs to approach him and have him explain it. I know for years as he was building his base, he offered up the idea about buying up small markets. He said that Air America would fail because they did it all wrong.

Like you say, the lib's/progressives/ and Dems (?) need to counter the conservanazi hate radio machine with alternative topics and the truth.

74. Liberals, progressives and THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY should counter
conservanazi hate radio. The conservanazis have their talking points for the day and they spew it out over and over and over. Their truebeliever wingnuts spew it word for word.
Now, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND IT'S FOLLOWERS need to get small market radio stations and start to broadcast shows like Bill Press, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, and Norman Goldman. Or, if there is none in your area, look up WCPT, 820 AM in Chicago and listen to those shows. I listened to them for the last few years I worked all over SE Wisconsin.

Fight the conservanazi propaganda with a liberal/progressive message.

77. Find out what church hannity goes to (if any) and show up
and give them a good course in passive resistance. Singing. Praying against him in his church. Holding up banners outside proclaiming his church to be racist just because he's there. There are many ways to turn the tables on him.
Bus loads of homeless and drop them off at churches hannity or bill o'lielly go to. It's all in fun. It's all in fun, but the main point is to show them that they are vunerable to the same kind of shit they put out and that turnabout is fair play. Also, remind them that it's dangerous out there, ESPECIALLY IN THEIR LITTLE WHITEBREAD conservanazi-loving church. Which BTW, Jesus Christ himself wouldn't cross the threshold to visit.

that are trying to destroy Medicare claim to be Christians. That doesn't say much for their kind of Christianity.

Is God dead? Imaginary? Uncaring? Psycho? Mean? Some combination.

Anything else, he'd be a pillar of salt. At best.

spending tons of money for security because they fear for their lives. You can bet on it.

If it wouldn't be for government or laws, their asses would have been assassinated a long time ago. I remind lots of conservanazis I run into that claim government doesn't work that if it wasn't for government and laws, their sorry asses would have been robbed and killed by the time they got to me or real soon after.

47. I think it's high time we started a campaign to Shut Down Fox "News."
Edited on Thu Apr-28-11 04:19 PM by calimary
I'm sorry - I've had enough. When that network has assholes on it who exhort and inspire violence in their nutcase audience, when they spew lies that cause people to be threatened or even shot, when they showcase knuckledraggers who are allowed to say the most reckless and manifestly irresponsible, not to mention ENTIRELY false, with impunity, to poison the public discourse, I don't think they deserve to be operating anymore. They are a national threat. They are a threat to our national security. And they should be described and referred to as such. They should be closed down.

I think in a case like this, the First Amendment does NOT give them cover - anymore than you can shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater. When you're stirring up the worst in the worst kinds of people, then you bear responsibility for what they do as a result.

There's freedom of speech and there's freedom of speech. But you should NOT be allowed to spread lies and adversely impact public opinion.

I'm just frickin' DONE with them. And ALL OF AMERICA should be, too. Boycotts are NOT enough. The whole accursed operation should be CLOSED DOWN.

62. But will they still watch it when they think nobody's looking?
That's my problem here - well one of MANY problems I have with Pox Noise.

OR we have to reinstitute broadcast regulations and ownership restrictions - in the name of leveling the playing field even just a wee bit. When the deck is so frickin' stacked against us, it's time to bring on the regulators. Unfortunately we have too many republi-CONS standing in the way, and we have too many alleged Dems who are spineless and keep joining in with the bad guys - OR they think it's so important to find agreement that it only fuels the arguments of those who claim, sometimes correctly, that there's no difference between the parties so what difference does it make who you vote for? I once had ain INFURIATING conversation with michael o'hanlon of the Brookings Institution (supposed to be a "liberal" think tank, 'eh? So how come he's listed among the PNAC?) and he was SO adamant about agreeing with the CONS he was supposed to be debating and against whom he was supposed to be offering an opposing view. Hell, he might as well have told THEM to go home so he could go take their place and advance THEIR argument.

75. I immediately knew that this church had an African American pastor
before I got to the post that proved it. All one has to say is that some idiot on Fox Not-the-news spewed a hate speech about it and the wingnuts started calling and threatening. I knew they had a black minister.

Racism through conservanazi media is normal. That's all they are about: hatred, prejudices and fear.

hannity go to church somewhere, and if so, where? that's what we need to find out. Then that pastor and place and congregation needs to be scrutinized. hannity, as a projectionist, thinks that because he prefers the company of whites, and because he knows how he feels about blacks, that the fact that Obama has a black pastor is proof that Obama is racist. hannity is so sick and so off the mark, and so miserable that only a dose of his own medicine would have a chance of slowing down his stupidity. I wonder what his wife is like? how sick is that woman? Her and any kids there might be have to live out their lives in hiding all because of this disgusting klansmen.
