Arpaio’s top aide lied, tried to influence election, documents reveal
Source: Tucson Citizen

David Hendershott, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s longtime chief deputy,
engaged in immoral conduct and violated a range of office and county policies,
according to 300 pages of heavily redacted documents from an internal investigation
turned over Thursday to The Arizona Republic by Arpaio’s office.

Violations cited in the documents included incompetence, lying, misuse of county
resources and attempting to influence an election.

However, the report also exonerated Hendershott of a variety of other misconduct allegations,
including some involving posse finances. The documents said certain accusations remain unresolved.

The documents were just a portion of the 1,022-page report prepared by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office,
which Arpaio asked to examine the misconduct allegations. Up until Thursday, Arpaio refused to release
any portions of the report, citing legal concerns. The Republic and 12 News have filed a special
action in Superior Court seeking release of the entire report.

4. It ticks me off that Hendershott is going to be drawing $203K in pension
For what? Years of illegal abuse of the system?

PHOENIX -- Until Wednesday, David Hendershott was the top paid Sheriff's deputy in Maricopa County. His annual salary was at least $177,000 a year, plus he receives an annual pension of $63,000 from his first tour of duty with the county.

His second tour ended Wednesday with his resignation letter. Sheriff Joe Arpaio had announced last Friday he was firing Hendershott along with deputy chief executive Larry Black but accepted both men's resignation letters effective immediately.

Although Hendershott will no longer be receiving his hefty salary, he will soon qualify for a new pension. CBS 5 News plugged Hendershott's numbers into the county's public safety retirement worksheet and estimated he'll qualify for an additional annual pension of $140,000.

That means even after he leaves, he'll continue to cost county taxpayers an estimated grand total of $203,000 every year.

7. He's getting paid to be a scapegoat
Looks to me like Arpeggio got some good ol boy fellow sheriff to do an investigation and blame this dude for all the fuckups that have occurred during his administration, then allow the guy to retire with an outrageous pension to compensate him for all the shit he's gonna take.

8. Maricopa County is sure good to their employees. Wonder how
Edited on Thu Apr-28-11 06:05 PM by Downwinder
many of the private citizens don't have a decent retirement program.

Is the GOP going to hold Hendershott up as an example of public retirement abuse?

6. Arpaio thoughest sheriff...
in the west?
I don't know about that, but his reign of terror continues to intimidate and harass anyone who isn't white.
Maricopa County is run a lot like Nazi Germany if you happen to be brown.

Yes, we have an illegal alien problem, but the way it is handled by Arpaio's sheriff's office is just wrong.

10. Here's a link to a longer article from the Arizona Republic:
http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/azelections/articles/2011/04/28/20110428arpaio-top-aide-misconduct-findings-brk28-ON.html

It list some specific allegations.

Here's one:

• Hendersott stopped an internal affairs investigation into a Sheriff's Office
captain who lied about being involved in a domestic incident. In 2009, the captain
threw rocks at his wife's car, made offensive gestures at police and his wife, and
sent an offensive message. He was prosecuted in Peoria for the conduct and paid a fine.
But he lied to Peoria police about his actions, the report says, and Hendershott
stopped an internal Sheriff's Office investigation.
