Obama mocks Trump's presidential ambitions
Source: AP

By BRADLEY KLAPPER

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama exacted his revenge Saturday after weeks of attacks from his would-be Republican challenger Donald Trump, joking that the billionaire businessman could bring change to the White House, transforming it from a stately mansion into a tacky casino with a whirlpool in the garden.

With Trump in attendance, Obama used the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner to mock the reality TV star's presidential ambitions. The president said Trump has shown the acumen of a future president, from firing Gary Busey on a recent episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" to focusing so much time on conspiracy theories about Obama's birthplace.

After a week when Obama released his long-form Hawaii birth certificate, he said Trump could now focus on the serious issues, from whether the moon landing actually happened to "where are Biggie and Tupac?"

"No one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than 'the Donald,'" Obama said, referring to Trump's claims the same day that he was responsible for solving the issue.

7. On the contrary we need much more selling and promoting of Democratic ideas and ideals..
The opposition is very good at it and has about 40% of America brainwashed into thinking bad is good and good is bad.

9. Unfortunately, I agree that Candidate Obama and
President Obama, have proven to be two separate entities. I did not read the link you provided (yet), it's early and I am speaking from personal observation.

Again unfortunately, I do not see that (true) Democrats and/or Progressives have much of a choice for another "election cycle." Unless we can get a proven Progressive to run (he shouldn't have to primary, IMO, for the Democratic slot, we have more than enough room and money on the political stage to handle a third (at least) party. We, again IMO, need to have more than 2 viable parties.

I would prefer a labor party (along with my pony) and a candidate like Bernie Sanders (S), to run on a separate ticket. I think he could garner a large part of the Union contribution (even though Unions do not have near the money of Wall St. and the RW elites), maybe Americans are tired enough of the status quo (screwing poor and working people) that they would actually register and vote in unprecedented numbers.

Assuming of course, that our votes actually make a difference. It would be wonderful, but unlikely, if the FEC actually changed the voting process into one WE could be sure of. At least issuing receipts where computer voting is used (almost everywhere). Ideally, a receipt and hand counted ballots would serve Americans best. Either way, a receipt is crucial so that we can prove who we all vote for, especially in our often contentious races.

Federal elections SHOULD NOT be controlled on the state level, they should be completely overseen by the FEC.

10. Receipts are a good idea BUT
They need to be behind a window or something, not something you can take with you. Having receipts that people can use to "prove" who they voted for violates the confidentiality of elections and allows vote buying and/or bullying (by employers, thugs, etc.). What needs to happen is after you make your selections you see a PRINTED physical copy of your choices, ok it (or complain if there's a problem), and then it drops into the repository to be available for a hand recount if needed.

53. We all have our own opinions which is the way it
should be.

IMO, I would feel much more confident that my vote was actually counted, If I had a receipt in my pocket or safe. I do see your concerns about vote buying, bullying, etc... But I still believe that we should have a way to verify the electoral process. There have been so many voting irregularities over the years and I can ot see how a "viewed receipt" would ensure verification if a recount were needed.

I don't have all the answers but I do have some of the questions...thanks.

77. I think we should cast different
colored stones of equal weight into different dumpsters. Each rock would be weighed to ensure correct heft before it was tossed in. Poll monitors would continuously check the scales and weigh random rocks on different scales. At 7:00pm the dumpsters would be weighed to see who wins. If there was a question about the outcome, the rocks could be counted and weighed by hand, and it could be confirmed that no one had thrown an anvil into one of the dumpsters when no one was looking. It would have the added advantage of eliminating computers from elections and the ballots would be too heavy for anyone to move around without a crane, so there would be no "chain of custody" issues or boxes of paper ballots disappearing. :smoke:

primaries in 08?

What were the consequences of previous third party candidates going all the way back to Teddy Roosevelt and his Progressive Party (also known as the Bull Moose party)? What happened when Anderson, Perot, and Nader ran as third party candidates?

46. They pushed public opinion left or populist, so the major parties added ideas to platforms.
Their input was vital to encourage mainstream candidates to define what they believed in and feel that the wind was at their back to go more progressive.

While I might like to see a parliamentary system instead of our 'winner takes all' system, we can't forget that TWO parties are still better than ONE. We must never forget that the GOP, since the advent of Tom Delay gerrymandering and dirty tricks is pushing for a ONE-party state under corporatist rule. While we fight amongst ourselves, they advance their plan and we can't forget it.

Those who sit on the sidelines and refuse to get into the fray on the local level, which is the place where our numbers rise or fall, are ceding the ground beneath their feet to the one-party rule of the GOP as seen in some states with NO Democrats or other parties in parts of their legislative bodies. They said they'd do it and they are.

Our job here on DU is to reform the Democratic Party, not split it, and to not fall for the well-funded, demoralizing media barrage that tell us that this party isn't good enough, that we should be ashamed to be Democrats. Any voice like that must be rejected, the meme is wrong and oppressive. We're not dealing with an electorate such as elected Carter or JFK, or possibly would have put RFK or JFK, Jr. in office. We're left with the only choice in this country for the foreseeable future being the elephant or the donkey. We have to build our party or we'll all be caught in the GOP paradigm.

Because the GOP is not split, even with their faux Tea Party. The Teabaggers are the fruit of GOP thinking, not a separate group. That's a scam created for independent voters. We don't have the luxury of voting independent on the biggest races, but can build from the smaller on up. We need every new representative, every new senator, governor, state, city and county officials to feel free to bray like donkeys and stop being afraid of elephants.

59. Thanks, I forgot to mention DeLay's brown shirt coup in 2000. How do people forget that?
Our party must overcome this elephant turned mammoth that is crushing us and our future. When we consider alternatives, they need to be within the party. Oh, I feel so old and maybe foreign saying that, but I've come to know the GOP very well.

We are foolish to fight so much that we don't recognize the danger facing us. People get tired, they don't see their highest aspirations reflected, but they forget that media in all forms is controlled by the right. They are not getting the picture.

Some get discouraged and even people here claim it's of no use to vote and that the parties are the same, that Democrats don't represent progressives. This was just as intended by the corporate media shills, even the 'professional left' discouraged progressive people from voting.

So it worked, coming from both sides. That's suspicious, and it's the soft sell version of voter suppression. It's the result that counts and not the method. Being discouraged by what you hear is not as blatant as dealing with legal and even physical roadblocks to keep voters from voting. Those are obvious, but those who did it are never called to account nor are they called to account for purging voter rolls. Why?

Because of conservative majorities in the legislatures, courts, and executive branches of government both federal and local. And definitely the media. Now they are going further, calling for restricting the vote to taxpayers, etc.

In the face of all this discouragement to vote by the GOP, how dare anyone say the parties are the same, or that voting is not relevant?

When was the last time Democrats did these things? Never.

As far as the most recent fiasco in 2010, did the regressives stay home? No, they always vote. Obama didn't win in 2008 because the GOP stayed home!

He won because so many people believed and wanted hope and change. He was not the embodiment of that and said so repeatedly. We have to keep this going. Those are ephemeral concepts but they are what drive progressives to vote.

The first thing Palin did when Obama inherited her party's disaster, was to mock 'hope and change'. Such aspirations are fragile and easily shot down. The media has ignored what good Obama has done, misreported and failed to investigate, but then they are doing the bidding of their owners.

Too many Democrats parrot those words. Despite their progressive desires, they are crushing those who are actually doing the work on the ground, denying them the numbers needed to get the job done. Self-fulfilling fears creating failures, all from our side, still drowning in right wing propaganda.

The GOP are ruthless, well-funded and we dare not toss aside their threats or somehow believe they don't mean what they say they intend to do. All we have are each other, and they have made us afraid to speak in public venues. Their attacks on unions are the means of shutting up those with some money and organization.

As far as the Great Depression being repeated, it's how the GOP helped to fund itself to the Presidency post-Truman. It's willful ignorance to say the GOP will do anything to create jobs, ever. Or protect small businesses, because they don't.

It's not profitable, it's not the 'big fish swallows the little fish' model they believe in. The donkey needs to kick those who are so deluded in the head until they wake up.

The GOP loves recessions. They love depressions even more. They want people unemployed, willing to work as slaves. They want homes repossessed so they can get the property cheap.

Yes, there are people who want all those bad things. It's anathema to you, but not to them. It's good for business.

Those who call people still supporting Democrats 'sheeple' who need to wake up and smell the conspiracy, need to wake up and realize the Koch brothers funded their anti-government heroes.

88. The MSM and both parties
conspired to keep Dennis out of the "debates" after the first one.
He was "stirring the shit" that the other candidates did not want to touch.
Prior to the "Bull Moose" party, third party candidates were instrumental in shaping our political system.
Originally, in America, it was not the Democrats and Republicans.

These parties morphed from other parties of the period. I am working off of memory but it can easily be googled. I think one of the original parties were the Federalists (named for the Federalist papers) written by Thomas Jefferson.

Just because these political party changes occurred mainly during our countries infancy, does not mean that we should not continue to Progress and IMO, create and disband parties depending on the prevailing needs of our citizenry.

When a "party" has an outdated platform or a platform that they do not adhere to, IMO they are irrelevant and another party should either replace them or compete with them.

I realize that (again) we have waited too late to form a different, viable, political party for this presidential race. I will (like pre 2008) "hold my nose" and vote Democrat. The "lesser of two evils", IMO.

Many people called for the creation of a strong Progressive party around 2009, yet we did not attempt it. So here we are. Hoping that our President will reverse course after he is (hopefully) re-elected.

"Donald Trump often appears on Fox, which is ironic because a fox often appears on Donald Trump's head."

"If you're at the Washington Post table with Trump and you can't finish your entrée, don't worry, the fox will eat it."

"Donald Trump said recently he had a ‘great relationship with the blacks,’ but unless ‘the Blacks’ are a family of white people, I bet he’s mistaken."

25. A lot of Republican candidates have stayed away from the birther issue
They've let Mr. Trump and other fringe members of the party keep it alive, probably hoping it would blow up in the fringe members' faces prior to the primaries and leave the Bush-Cheney country-club "mainline" GOPhers (e.g., Romney, Gingrich, etc.) to battle for the votes and delegates. Now the mainline Republicans may be birthers like Trump, but they've kept their mouths shut about it for the most part, as far as I know.

Edited on Sun May-01-11 10:09 AM by Honeycombe8
Such seriousness, even when faced with serious problems in the country (and there are always serious problems facing the country), is unhealthy.

It's why escapist movies are popular during depressions and recessions. A person needs to get away from all the seriousness, or a person would go mad.

Read up....laughter is one of the healthiest things a person can do. It not only makes you happy, it makes you live longer and more robustly. It helps to de-stress, and therefore, makes a person work all the more efficiently and better, when returning to the seriousness of work.

I don't like politicians w/o a sense of humor. For one thing, you have to be at least somewhat intelligent to have a really keen sense of humor, and the ability to laugh at oneself is a requirement, to me, for any politician I vote for.

But if you blame Obama for all of this, you are discounting what conservatives have been doing to this country for a generation.

It is deeply disturbing at times to see the genial relationship of those we think are so far apart politically. They can't survive if they are always on the attack

That's why we should not go after each other like mad dogs. Those up there don't do it. And all we have is each other.

Things like this are an escape from the horrors of what is going on, with a few digs added in to spur thoughts, so I enjoy them a bit. Obama is the most maligned person I've ever seen, from the right and the faux left. And I'm sure you know what would have been said if Obama did not take the time to attend this event.

Peace and take care, 'union yes!'

The man has to look in the mirror and say "Oh yeah, that looks good..."

Oy.

Honestly, I feel sorry for the man. He's overcompensating.

66. Thanks, I see the pout. GOPhers count on Obama play dead while they throw stones.
It's typical, they demand we have a higher standard, be more forgiving, look to the big picture, which we do, in respect to all.

Just as DeLay said of his jury in Austin, Texas, he expected the liberals would show mercy on him and not convict him. Because they were liberals, no less.

They use our strengths and principles against us.

Obama was quite kind and didn't even bring up the race issue IMHO. But then he never does, nor is he vicious.

Because he's not mentally ill!

and his hair is blonder than the woman's to his right. Ronnie Reagan was 70 and didn't have a gray hair on his head. Isn't it inspiring how natural sociopathic narcissism can keep the gray at bay?

Love Seth do the news on SNL I bet he was terrific last night. Ok, I'm off to a corner to sulk. ;p

39. Poor
I was at a free clinic friday for a medical condition. you pay on an scale of what you can afford. They were going to charge me 2$ for the service they provide and I thought that it is wonderful that the clinic will help people for that amount. But I had to ask myself how they can afford to this. So I was able to scrape up 7$ because I felt bad about only being able to give them 2$. These are the people we should be pouring our adulation on. Not some bait and switch pol!

42. I really enjoyed it. Smacking down Trump and other liars.
It was a great smack down of Trump and his fellow racists that was very gratifying.

I also liked his bit about "Some people say Michelle Bachman was born in Canada... You see, Representative Bachman, this is how it starts."

And then after the live birth video, addressing Fox News-- please note, this is a joke. This is not a real video. It is a children's cartoon.

72. After all the birther crap, Obama had every right to take this opportunity
Both from a personal standpoint and as an opportunity to ratchet down the radical right. The Tea Party / Birther / "Obamacare = Communism" campaign is a distraction to focus away from important issues that need attention. It's a good thing to be able to put facts (and fiction) into perspective. For some people, an added element of humor will finallly drive the point home when other tactics have failed. This campaign of hate and divisiveness will only damage Republicans. So let it happen. Hopefully we can get to a point where we seriously and deliberately pursue meaningful change (I know, it's an overused term), but it'll only happen when conservative legislators are in the minority. And that means a 40% minority or less.

57. Got to admit our President has class. Good on you, Obama!
Something Different

"Just like Obama, we don't need no drama"

Hey.. my Healthy SF insured son just got diagnosed with Lymphoma... do you think you could be
classy enough to kick in Universal Health Care.. just to show your power? Would be way cool,
given all the radiation poisoning we are all being hit with after Cheney gangs last gasp in Japan.

Oh, and could you give a shout out to San Francisco that his health home has always been Kaiser,
where he is being treated now? That they need to add that option on the enrollment forms as a choice,
cause right now they are insisting his "home" is SF General, but really that was the only listed choice.

Turns out Kaiser is on the list, but it shows up in a brochure after the fact. Can you fix that? Cause
the directors here are going to pay the bill anyway, and he is more comfortable with the group he grew up with, please.

Oh... did I mention, once released from Kaiser, his only treatment center is SF General. And they have no beds. And they
are already overwhelmed with helping the really poor.

Can you or your staff, maybe Nancy Pelosi, give San Francisco a little lesson in class, please and ease my son's mind by
letting his patient care be focused on the care like they mean it?

The problem with narcissists is that they only play well in small rooms full of people whose egoes he can stroke. Put Trump in front of America and his bullshit is going to get called every time.

He's been basking in praise and adoration from the sycophants on his payroll and the dumbass crazy birthers and has had his head so far up his own ass he doesn't know what to do when confronted with reality. Narcissitic ball of fuck is all he's ever been. Hopefully he'll learn his lesson and go back to his stupid tv show and beauty pageants.

He knew full well that the birther bullshit was nonsense yet he lied through his teeth anyway and said he had investigators in Hawaii who had "found things." Trump has zero integrity and isn't fit to occupy any position of power.
