Mitt Romney scores $10 million in Vegas telethon

Reporting from Las Vegas— The venue and approach were about as far removed from Mitt Romney’s straight-laced, wealthy persona as could be, but that didn’t stop about 800 volunteers from gathering in a deserted wing of the Las Vegas Convention Center early Monday to participate in the first major telethon of the 2012 Republican presidential campaign.

Supporters of the former Massachusetts governor spent the day huddled around phones as they asked friends, family and business associates to make donations. They raised $10.25 million, according to the campaign.

“I’m calling raising funds for Mitt Romney for president,” one volunteer said over his cellphone as he tried to reach a potential donor. “Tell him it won’t take but a second to get his credit card number.”

“I’m taking your political pulse this morning,” he said to another. “How are you feeling?”

There is no truth to the rumors that Fox News head Roger Ailes has handpicked Romney as the GOP establishment candidate, and is trying to beat down potential challengers.

:sarcasm:

2. Plus, He Has Beaten McCain's Record For Flip Flops Everytime...
...he tries to explain his position on Healthcare Reform. He is just another George Bush package pushing a 2012 version of compassionate conservatism, which will screw us all in the end.

6. Romney raises $10 million in one day of phone calls
Source: Washington Post

Mitt Romney, the all-but-declared Republican presidential contender, who has kept his head low for much of the year as he collected cash, raised $10.25 million Monday after bringing together his network of wealthy donors to dial for dollars.

Romney’s team hoped the hefty one-day total would show his strength in the emerging field.

The phone-bank fundraiser at the Las Vegas Convention Center, much like one during his first attempt at the GOP nomination, was the centerpiece of a series of fundraising events that included a conference call with volunteers who were asked to solicit friends and neighbors for donations.

“This is a big kickoff for us, for our fundraising effort. It’s kind of a celebration,” Romney told the more than 400 supporters tuned in to watch him host a brief town-hall-style broadcast on Facebook. “It’s important to me that we get that started, the ball rolling today.”

Woohoo...Roger Ailes' handpicked safe and boring Republican candidate is getting millions in campaign dollars from the Republican establishment. Once again, the Tea Party is thrown aside because they are no longer useful to generate pout rage at President Obama. Now, Fox News needs to start packaging a "serious looking candidate" as Paul Krugman might say.

Can you say Compassionate Conservatism, Part Deaux?

7. Romney is clearly trying to intimidate the field with "inevitable nominee" status early on.
Much like Hillary Clinton had "inevitable nominee" status early in the Dem race in 08. Except Mitt is not nearly in so strong a position as Clinton was.

9. I'd be worried about this if.....
he wasn't his own worst enemy. The guy can't let things go the right way. He find s away to ruin any momentum he gains. Like most on that side of the fence, I doubt he's learned from his mistakes.

11. The corporatists want Romney.
He is one of them (as Ted Kennedy made an issue of it in 1994) and will do as he is told.

12. Dare I suggest: Why don't all the candidates (both parties)
agree to donate all their millions in campaign contributions to the US government to help pay off our national debt.

Shared Sacrifice, you know.

14. But she was running in a blue state whereas Romney is running in a purple country.
Money is no guarantee of success, but it's hard to make any traction without it either.
