Air Force One lands safely after aborted attempt with Obama aboard
Source: Associated Press

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Air Force One with President Barack Obama aboard made an aborted landing attempt at the Windsor Locks, Conn., airport Wednesday before trying again and landing safely, officials said.

The White House and Federal Aviation Administration say it was a routine maneuver where the pilot was in the process of landing, but because of weather conditions decided to circle the runway before trying again and landing safely.

The sky was heavily clouded in Connecticut, where the president traveled Wednesday to deliver the commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London.

5. I've been thru that a few times...
not on AF1, of course, but on regular old planes that were headed on it, then pulled up, out and away...Kind of a freaky feeling for us landlubbers...but so it goes...

7. He should get one. The technology isn't that sophisticated.
Even Hitler had an escape pod. Well, it was more like a comfy chair with a parachute and trap-door assembly.

12. It's called a "go-around"...
Edited on Wed May-18-11 01:22 PM by regnaD kciN
...and it's a pretty routine aircraft maneuver. Airline pilots practice it over and over in their every-six-month simulator check, and they actually happen quite often (say, if spacing between arriving aircraft has fallen below the regulated minimum. Not unusual or perilous at all.

20. I live in Windsor Locks
Just three miles from the airport. Surprised the plane landed at all. Very cloudy, very foggy. Ceiling was about 100ft.
